GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR
When you downshift, always go from FOURTH to THIRD, from THIRD
to SECOND, and from SECOND to FIRST. See the chart below for
shifting speeds.
.
When you have to slow down in heavy traffic or while driving up
steep hills, shift to THIRD before the engine starts to labor. Such
downshifting reduces the chance of stalling and gives better acceleration
when you need to increase your speed again. While driving down-hill,
shifting to THIRD helps to maintain safe speed and to prolong brake
life. The best range for making this shift is between 55 and 25
mph.
Your synchronized transmission allows you to shift into FIRST
smoothly while your car is in motion. To avoid possible damage to
the clutch, however, don't shift to FIRST when your car is moving
over 20 mph.
To shift to REVERSE from NEUTRAL, press down on the gearshift
knob while in neutral, maintain downward pressure and press down on
the clutch pedal. Pull the shift lever to the left, overcoming the extra-
spring pressure, and move the gear shift to the REVERSE position
shown on the knob. Release the clutch pedal.
CAUTION-Always bring your car to a complete stop before shifting into
or out of REVERSE.
To park your car, shift into the REVERSE position and set the park-
ing brake when you leave your car.
