Chapter 1: Introduction Chapter 2 Initial Configuration 2.1 Prerequisites To ensure the correct functioning of EVO:RAIL and an optimal end-to-end user experience, understanding the recommendations and requirements in the EVO:RAIL documentation is essential. Availability of resources and workload is critical for any environment, but even more so in a hyper-converged environment as compute, networking, storage, and management are provided on the same platform.

Initial user interface 2.3 EVO:RAIL Initial Configuration Overview After you have completely filled out your EVO:RAIL Network Configuration Table, you are ready to begin EVO:RAIL Initial Configuration. There are four ways to configure EVO:RAIL. Default values are based on a JSON-formatted file described in Appendix A.

If you click the Customize button you can configure hostnames, IP addresses, VLAN IDs, and passwords. Most fields have default values to make initial configuration quick and easy.
  • Page 17 Chapter 1: Introduction • Click Virtual SAN and enter the Starting and Ending address for IP pool, the Virtual SAN VLAN ID, and the Netmask. Figure 3. Configure Networking Step 6. Click vCenter Server to enter the IP address for EVO:RAIL Management and vCenter Server.
  • Page 18 SuperServer 2028TP-VRL Series User's Manual Step 9. Click Globals to specify the time zone, logging, and any existing DNS, NTP, or Proxy servers on your network. If you have multiple servers, please separate them with commas. EVO:RAIL will configure each of these services, as needed. For example, all ESXi hosts and the vCenter Server are configured with the specified NTP server when this field is filled out.
  • Page 19 Chapter 1: Introduction If you lose connectivity during the appliance build process, you will need to browse to port 7443 on the new IP address. (for example, https://10.10.10.200:7443) If EVO:RAIL cannot connect to the new IP address that you configured, you will get a message to fix your network and try again. If you are unable to connect to the new IP address after 20 minutes, EVO:RAIL will revert to its original configuration and you will need to re-enter your custom configuration.
  • Page 20: Json Configuration File

SuperServer 2028TP-VRL Series User's Manual 2.4 JSON Configuration File EVO:RAIL relies on a JSON-formatted file to initially populate fields in the user interface. The end user is presented with this data during initial appliance configuration (both for Customize and Just Go workflows). The initial configuration file is found on the EVO:RAIL service datastore at: /usr/lib/vmware-marvin/marvind/webapps/ROOT/WEB-INF/classes/ default-config-static.json...
  • Page 21: Json File Format And Valid Values

Chapter 1: Introduction Step 4. Make sure that the file is in valid JSON format because EVO:RAIL will not validate the syntax (e.g., a missing comma will cause the configuration file to fail). EVO:RAIL will validate the content of a correctly formatted JSON file in the same manner that it validates manual entries, verifying data entry and performing deep validation prior to building the appliance.

SuperServer 2028TP-VRL Series User's Manual • vcenter: alphanumeric string for the vCenter Server hostname • passwords: clear text password containing between five and 20 characters, at least one of which must be a special character. It cannot have any character repeated three or more times in a row.

If enabled, the fans will either shift to a lower speed or stop when the aggregate sensor temperatures are satisfied, indicating the system is at ideal thermal/light loading conditions. When the aggregate sensor temperatures are not satisfied, the fans will shift back to normal control curves.

  • Page 29: Reliable Ground

Chapter 3 Installation in a Rack Reliable Ground A reliable ground must be maintained at all times. To ensure this, the rack itself should be grounded. Particular attention should be given to power supply connections other than the direct connections to the branch circuit (i.e. the use of power strips, etc.). To prevent bodily injury when mounting or servicing this unit in a rack, you must take special precautions to ensure that the system remains stable.

2028TP-VRL Series User's Manual 3.2 Installing the Rails There are a variety of rack units on the market, which may require a slightly different assembly procedure. Do not use a two post "telco" type rack. This rail set fits a rack between 26.5" and 36.4"...
  • Page 31: Releasing The Inner Rail

Chapter 3 Installation in a Rack Releasing the Inner Rail Each inner rail has a locking latch. This latch prevents the server from coming completely out of the rack when when the chassis is pulled out for servicing. To mount the rail onto the chassis, first release the inner rail from the outer rails. 1.
  • Page 32: Installing The Inner Rails

2028TP-VRL Series User's Manual Installing the Inner Rails Begin the rack mounting procedure by installing the inner rails to the chassis. 1. Identify the left and right inner rails. They are labeled. 2. Place the inner rail firmly against the side of the chassis, aligning the hooks on the side of the chassis with the holes in the inner rail.
  • Page 33: Assembling The Outer Rails

Chapter 3 Installation in a Rack Assembling the Outer Rails Each outer rail comes in two sections that may require assembly before mounting onto the rack. 1. Identify the left and right outer rails by examining the ends, which bend outward. Match the left front outer rail with the left rear outer rail and the same for the right rails.

Chapter 4: Maintenance and Component Installation 4.3 Chassis Components Storage Drives The SC217HQ+ chassis contains four individual motherboards in separate node drawers. Each motherboard node controls a set of six drives. Note that if a node drawer is pulled out of the chassis, the hard drives associated with that node will power down as well.
  • Page 40: Replacing A Drive

2028TP-VRL Series User's Manual Replacing a Drive The drives are mounted in drive carriers to simplify their installation and removal from the chassis. Both procedures may be done without removing power from the system. These carriers also help promote proper airflow for the drive bays. Removing a Hot-Swap Drive Carrier 1.

Install a new drive into the carrier with the printed circuit board side facing down so that the mounting holes align with those in the carrier.
  • Page 42: System Cooling

2028TP-VRL Series User's Manual System Cooling Four fans provide cooling for the chassis. These fans circulate air through the chassis as a means of lowering the chassis internal temperature. The SC217HQ+ system fans are easy to change modules. There is no need to uninstall any other parts inside the system when replacing fans, and no tools are required for installation.
