Wiping and Swabbing

Cleaning the 7122 printhead consists of wiping and swabbing. Use these
procedures under the following circumstances:
Routine cleaning - check the printhead and wipe it off to prevent ink
buildup
Incident recovery - inspect the printhead and clean off any dried ink if
a print quality defect occurs. Defects include: charge shorts,
streakers, crooked jets, and general raggedness (loss of print
'window').
Dried ink is visible on the eyelid or lower portion of the printhead.
Accumulated dried ink will cause print defects. Cleaning off dried ink
should always be the first step in any effort to correct a print quality
problem.

Routine Cleaning

During normal operation, ink will collect on the lower surfaces of the
printhead from mist or spray produced by the curtain of drops falling to the
substrate. The clean cycles run during shutdown should remove this ink
before it becomes a problem. Inspect the printhead periodically to see if
the buildup is present. If print quality problems appear, use the following
procedure to clean the 7122 printhead during normal operation:
1. Shut the system down to perform a printhead clean.
2. Run test prints and see if print quality has been restored. If it has not,
run a second printhead cleaning cycle. If the problem persists,
continue with the remaining steps.
3. Install the catch pan (see "Catch Pan Installation" on 4-6).
