11 RECLINER
WARNING
When returning the occupant of the wheelchair to the
full upright position, more body strength will be
required for approximately the last twenty degrees of
incline (reverse recline). Make sure to use proper body
mechanics (use your legs) or seek assistance if necessary
to avoid injury.
1.
Unfold wheelchair. Refer to Safety/Handling of Wheelchairs on
page 19.
2.
Attach spreader bar. Refer to Storing/Replacing Spreader Bar on
page 63.
3.
Adjust the tightness of the headrest/back upholstery. Refer to
Adjusting Headrest/Back Upholstery Tension on page 63.
4.
Make sure wheelchair is occupied and on a level surface before
reclining.
5.
Engage the wheel locks. Refer to Using Patient Operated Wheel Locks
on page 57.
6.
Inform the occupant of the wheelchair that the wheelchair is about to
be reclined.
7.
Make sure occupant's hands and body are clear of all pinch points.
8.
Stand behind the wheelchair and grasp both push handles firmly.
9.
Squeeze release handles.
10. Slowly pull back on the back assembly while squeezing the release
handles.
11. When the back reaches the desired angle, slowly let go of the release
handles.
12. To return the back to the full upright position, reverse STEPS 8-11
keeping in mind proper body mechanics.
