5-Vari Program Types and Features

x

: Portrait mode

By using exposure control with a wide
aperture (a low aperture number), this mode
keeps a shallow depth of field (restricting the
range of focus in front of and behind the
subject). This allows you to take pictures in
which your subject stands out clearly against
a softly blurred background, giving a feeling
of depth in the shot.
Recommended lens: The most effective
lenses for this mode are bright telephoto lenses in the 50 to 135 mm range.
c
: Landscape mode
By using exposure control with a narrow
aperture (a high aperture number), this mode
give a large depth of field (extending the
range of focus in front of and behind the
subject) to allow you to take pictures of
scenery in which the both near and distant
objects are in sharp focus.
Lenses from wide-angle through to telephoto
can be used in this mode.
• In some photography conditions care is needed to avoid camera shake since
a slow shutter speed may be used. (A tripod should be used in such
situations.)
v

: Close-up mode

This mode uses exposure control with a wide
aperture to give a relatively shallow depth of
field so that you can take close-up shots in
which your subject stands out clearly against
a softly blurred background.
Recommended lens: The most effective
lenses for this mode are the Micro Nikkor
lenses.
• In some photography conditions care is
needed to avoid camera shake since a slow shutter speed may be used.
(A tripod should be used in such situations.)
