USING FIREWORKS CS4
Applying color, strokes, and fills
Create and edit solid fills
Create and use fills for vector objects and text, and use the Paint Bucket or Gradient tool to fill pixel selections based
on current fill settings.
The Paint Bucket icon
indicates the Fill Color box in the Tools panel, the Property inspector, and the Color Mixer.
Change the solid fill color of vector drawing tools and the Paint Bucket tool
Select a vector drawing tool or the Paint Bucket tool.

Do one of the following:

• Press Control+D (Windows) or Command+D (Mac OS) to deselect all objects, and then click the Fill Color box
in the Property inspector to open the Fill Color pop-up window.
• Click the Fill Color box in the Tools panel or Color Mixer to open the color pop-up window.
Select a color for the fill from the set of swatches, or use the eyedropper pointer to sample a color from anywhere

on the screen.
Note: Selecting the Text tool always causes the Fill Color box to revert to the last solid text color used by the Text tool.
Edit the solid fill of a selected vector object
Click the Fill Color box in the Property inspector, Tools panel, or Color Mixer to open the color pop-up window.

Select a swatch.
Create and apply pattern and gradient fills
• Use pattern fills to fill a path object with a bitmap graphic.
• Use gradient fills to blend colors to create various effects. Fill categories other than None, Solid, Pattern, and Web
Dither are gradient fills.
Note: A newly created fill assumes the current color displayed in the Fill Color box in the Tools panel.
Apply a pattern fill to a selected object
Do one of the following:

• Select Pattern from the Fill Options pop-up menu in the Property inspector.
• Click the Fill Color box in the Tools panel, click Fill Options, and select Pattern from the Fill Options pop-up menu.
Select a pattern from the Pattern Name pop-up menu.

Create a custom pattern fill from an external file
Set a bitmap file as a new pattern fill, using files with these formats as patterns: PNG, GIF, JPEG, BMP, TIFF, and PICT
(Mac OS only). When a pattern fill is a 32-bit transparent image, the transparency affects the fill when it is used in
Fireworks. Images that are not 32-bit become opaque.
With vector object properties displayed in the Property inspector, select Pattern from the Fill Options pop-up

menu.
Click the Fill Color box and select Other from the Pattern Name pop-up menu.

Navigate to the bitmap file you want to use as the new pattern, and click Open.
