Face Detection

When the face detection function is activated, the camera will detect people's faces. When there are a number of
people in the picture, one person will be determined to be the main subject but you have the option to select a
different person as the main subject. The camera will keep tracking the main subject even when it moves.
You can use face detection with one of the autofocus functions to let the camera focus on the main subject
automatically (Face AF). You can also combine face detection with the focus guide (A 83) to help you focus on
the main subject manually.
1 Select > [ v Camera Setup] > [Face Detection] > [On].
• This is not available when slow & fast motion recording is activated and the shooting frame rate used is other
than 24P to 120P.
2 Select > [ v Camera Setup] > [Face AF] > [Face Priority] or [Face Only].
• (face priority) or
3 Point the camera at the subject.
• During continuous AF, the camera will keep focusing on the main subject's face. During one-shot AF, the
camera will focus on the main subject's face while you hold the ONE-SHOT AF button pressed down.
• All detected faces will have a face detection frame. The main subject will be indicated with a face detection
frame with small arrows.
Push the joystick left/right or turn the SELECT dial to select a different person as the main subject.
• During autofocus, a white frame will appear on the face of the main subject. During manual focus, the frame
will be gray or yellow*.

• If you use face detection together with the tracking function (A 90), the camera will be able to track the
selected main subject more reliably. When you touch a subject on the LCD screen, tracking will be activated
and the face detection frame will change to a double frame £ (tracking frame). This is better if you want to
track a subject when it is difficult to keep seeing their face.
Options
[Face Priority]: The camera focuses according to the AF mode currently selected.
[Face Only]: When a face is detected, the camera focuses according to the AF mode currently selected.
When there is no face detected, the camera locks the focus.

NOTES NOTES
• In certain cases, faces may not be detected correctly. Typical examples include:
- Faces extremely small, large, dark or bright in relation to the overall picture.
- Faces that are turned to the side, at a diagonal, partially hidden or upside-down.
