EVGA Z790 CLASSIFIED (121-RL-E798)
RAID0
: RAID0 is considered "Striping" or a "Striped Array." RAID0 takes a data
set and spreads it equally across two or more drives. Reading a file, for example, will be
much faster if the file is spread across multiple drives and read from each drive
simultaneously. This can reduce the time each drive spends reading data by at least 50%
compared to reading from one source. However, there is no fault tolerance, meaning if
one drive fails, the array fails and data will likely be permanently lost.
RAID0 can scale up to the limits of your controller, but performance will see
diminishing returns above 4 drives.
The Good-
Read/write speed of drives are greatly increased
Storage capacity loss is minimal, compared to other array types.
The Bad
RAID0 has no redundancy, which makes it very volatile. If even one drive fails,
the array and data is toast.
Although popular once, newer SSDs and storage options significantly
outperform or make RAID0 less relevant.
RAID1
: RAID1 is also called "Mirroring" or a "Mirrored Array." RAID1 uses two
physical drives and writes ALL data to both drives simultaneously, providing a real-time
100% redundancy. If a drive fails, you can continue using your system even if only one
drive is healthy.
RAID1 is limited to 2 drives. Because this is a mirror, you will use 50% of your capacity
for redundancy.
The Good-
RAID1 can suffer one failed drive without any affecting stored data.
The Bad-
Storage size is limited to the capacity of one drive.
Write speed will be a bit lower than a single drive.
A final note regarding capacity – Using drives of different sizes will affect the maximum
capacity of a RAID1. When creating the array, the controller will look at the drive with
the smallest capacity and use this amount as the size of the array. For example, let's say
you have two drives – one 1TB drive, one 500GB drive. The array size will be reduced
to a 500GB RAID1.
