17 Adjusting the Carburetor
► Fully depress the throttle trigger for at least
30 seconds (B) and hold it in that position.
The engine will accelerate, the chain will rotate and the
chain saw will be calibrated. Engine speed will vary
noticeably during calibration.
► If the engine shuts off, retry to calibrate. The calibration
was aborted.
► If the engine keeps shutting off, engage the chain brake
and have the chain saw inspected by an authorized STIHL
servicing dealer before further use.
► Release the throttle trigger as soon as the engine speed
drops noticeably (C).
The engine will run at idling speed. The chain saw is
successfully calibrated and ready for operation.
NOTICE
The chain saw may be incorrectly calibrated if the throttle
trigger is not kept fully depressed during calibration. This
may result in damage to the saw.
NOTICE
The calibration process will be aborted if the throttle trigger
is released before the saw is properly calibrated. It is then
necessary to restart the entire calibration process.

17.3 Winter Operation

The carburetor may ice up when the saw is used at ambient
temperatures below 50 °F (10 °C). To prevent icing, the
shutter must be converted to allow warm air from around the
engine to heat the carburetor.
► Shut off the engine, @ 15.
► Engage the chain brake, @ 12.1.

counter-clockwise with the combination wrench.
► Remove the shroud (2).
► Pull out the shutter (3).
► Re-insert the shutter as shown above. The "winter"
symbol (4) points toward the chain saw.
► Push the shutter into the slot until it stops.
► Place the shroud in position.
► Tighten the shroud locks until you hear an audible click.
NOTICE
The winter operation setting should only be used in ambient
temperatures below 50 °F (10 °C). Use at higher
temperatures may cause the engine to overheat, resulting in
permanent damage. Always remember to return the shutter
to the configuration that is appropriate for ambient
temperature conditions.
