The chain brake will operate only if the
hand guard has not been modified in any
way.
Check operation of the chain brake
Before starting work: Run engine at idle
speed, engage the chain brake (push
hand guard toward bar nose) and open
the throttle wide for no more than
3 seconds – the chain must not rotate.
The hand guard must be free from dirt
and move freely.
Chain brake maintenance
The chain brake is subject to normal
wear. It is necessary to have it serviced
and maintained regularly by trained
personnel. STIHL recommends that you
have servicing and repair work carried
out exclusively by an authorized STIHL
servicing dealer. Maintain the following
servicing intervals:
Full-time usage:
every 3
months
Part-time usage:
every 6
months
Occasional usage:
every 12
months

Winter Operation

Pre-heat carburetor at temperatures
below +10 °C

loosen screw (1) using the
combination wrench or a
screwdriver - open at least one turn

turn slide (2) from the s position
(summer operation) to the r
position (winter operation) – the
slide must engage audibly

Tighten screws
Now the carburetor is pre-heated by the
preheater plate – this helps prevent
carburetor icing.

At temperatures above +20 °C:
always return the slide to the
summer position –
otherwise risk of engine
malfunction due to overheating!
If engine trouble occurs, first return the
slide from winter to summer position.
Air filter system

Retrofit new air filter if necessary –
see "Air filter system"
At temperatures below -10 °C
Under extreme winter conditions
(temperatures below -10 °C, powdered
or drifting snow), it is recommended to
use the "cover plate mounting kit"
(special accessory). The mounting kit
keeps out powdered or drifting snow.

if the chain saw is extremely cold
(frost formation) – after starting,
bring the engine up to operating
temperature at medium speed
(disengage chain brake!)
