You are now ready to check the fit of your respirator prior to
entering the workplace.

When fit checks confirm that a satisfactory fit has been
achieved you are now ready to enter the workplace.
•
6.3. Notes on respirator usage
If/when odours or gases/vapours become noticeable
filters have served their useful life and must be replaced.
Particulate filters must be replaced when increased breathing
resistance occurs.
6.4. Instructions for negative pressure face fit checks (Fig. 3).
Before assigning any respirator to be worn in a contaminated area, we
recommend that a fit check be performed.
Negative pressure fit checks must be performed before entering the
workplace.
Place the palms of the hands (alternatively, pieces of cardboard or
plastic) over the open area of the filter retainer.
It is recommended that the respirator facepiece is examined to ensure that no other

components are defective which can contribute to inward leakage.

Inhale gently and hold your breath for 5-10 seconds.
If the facepiece collapses slightly, a proper fit has been obtained.
If air leakage is detected, reposition the respirator on the face and/or
readjust the tension of the headstraps to eliminate the leakage.
Repeat the above steps until a tight seal is obtained.
If you cannot achieve a proper fit, do not enter the contaminated
area. See your supervisor.

7. Maintenance and cleaning

(Fig. 4-12)
Cleaning is recommended after each use.
To clean, wash in warm detergent solution.
Rinse in clean water and air dry or dry with a soft clean cloth.
Disinfect in 70% ethyl, methyl or isopropyl alcohol, a quaternary
ammonium solution or a hypochlorite solution
(50ppm of chlorine).
Warning:
This lens is polycarbonate with an abrasion resistant coating.
It may be damaged by abrasive cleaners and some solvents.
Avoid acetone, methyl ethyl ketones, toluene, methylene chloride
and other strong solvents. Do not autoclave.
Respirator components, especially the exhalation valve
seats should be changed at least 2 years after commencement of use,
or 6 years after manufacture, whichever is earlier.
For each segment containing a dot, add one
year to the year indicated in the segment
alongside the 3M logo.
For example, "6" means 1996.
The manufacturing date of the face blank
can be determined by viewing the bar
diagram inside the facepiece above the
visor. The year is indicated by the two
digits and the month of that year can be
found by counting the number of dots to the
right of the year.

7.1. Cleaning, disinfection and replacement
The following table indicates the time intervals between cleaning,
disinfecting and replacement of parts.
The exhalation valve has a direct bearing on safety and its year of manufacture can be

established by examining the valve markings as indicated above.
