Figure 20. 1816 Keyboard Keys and Lights
The Numeric Light is on when the keyboard is in riumeric
(upper case) mode.
The ALPHA (Alphabetic) Light is on when the keyboard is
in alphabetic (lower case) mode.
The Proceed Light turns on when the program places the
keyboard in proceed status so that a character can be
entered.
The light turns off when a read command is per-
formed or when a key is pressed (keyboard service interrupt
is signaling the program that a character is ready to be read
into main storage). With the exception of TAB, REST KBD,
KBD REQ, and RETURN, the keys on the keyboard are
not
effective
unless the proceed light is on.
The Motor Key provides a means to turn the printer motor
on once it is turned off by the idle control circuit. The
printer motor remains on only during the time the switch
is pressed down. This switch is used primarily by customer
engineers.
The Tab Set and Gear Switch is located on the left side of
the front panel on the 1816. Pressing this switch down sets
a tab stop at the position at which the print-element carrier
is located. Pushing this switch up clears
any
tab stop at the
position at which the print-element carrier
is
located.
The Motor On/Off Switch
is
located on the right side of
the front panel on the 1816. This switch turns the power
to the printer motor on or off. This switch must
always
remain
on.
Damage can result if the switch is off and the
program issues a write or control command to the 1816.
OPERATOR CONTROLS, 1053 PRINTER (Figure 21)
The Tab Set and Gear Switch, when pressed down, sets a
tab stop at the position at which the prin t-element carrier
is located. Pushing this switch up clears any tab stop at the
position
at
which the print-element carrier is located.
The Tab Key, when pressed, causes the print-element
carrier to move to the next tab stop to the right.
The Space Key, when pressed, moves the print-element
carrier
one space to the right. The 1053 has a motor idle
control that removes power from the printer motor
after
approximately 2 minutes if the unit is not in use. Once
power has been removed, the space key is not
effective.
TAB or RETURN must be pressed to make SPACE
-
effective in this case.
The Return Key, when pressed, returns the carrier to the
left margin stop and advances the form a single or double
space depending on the line-space lever setting.
