EPSON Stylus COLOR 900/900N

2.1 Overview

The EPSON Stylus COLOR 900/900N includes a variety of new
features:
Y
Printhead
This EPSON Stylus COLOR 900/900N uses a new type of printhead
that combines black and color nozzles in one unit. A total of 480
nozzles enable the printer to print three lines in a single pass at 10
cpi. See
Section
2.2.2.1.
Y
Linear Encoder
An linear encoder sensor tracks the carriage's position against a
fixed encoder strip. This improves printing accuracy, provides a
means of quickly detecting paper jams while printing, and enables
printing in the carriage acceleration/deceleration zones near the
right and left margins (on normal paper at 360 x 360 dpi only). See
Section
2.2.
Y
Overheating Protection
Because the printhead contains many piezoelectric elements
(480 PZTs) driven at a high frequency (32.4 KHz), heat can quickly
build up in the printhead and printhead driver circuitry. Eight
separate sensors monitor the temperature at critical locations.
Should they detect excess heat, the printer can compensate by
activating a cooling fan, slowing its printing speed, flushing ink
through the nozzles, or shutting itself down. See
and
Section
2.3.9.

Chapter 2 Operating Principles
Unlike previous models, the paper feed motor of the EPSON
Stylus COLOR 900 drives only the paper feed mechanism. The
pump/ASF motor makes this possible by saving the paper feed
motor from having to drive two additional systems. This speeds
paper feeding and lets the printer to achieve higher throughput.
A solenoid-triggered, switchable transmission works with the
pump/ASF motor to transfer power between the pumping
mechanism and the ASF unit. See
The pump mechanism includes two sets of pressure roller
wheels and two waste ink tubes to distribute ink evenly in the
waste ink pads. See
Section
The plastic drive shaft in the ASF unit has been replaced with a
metal one. This prevents users from breaking it in trying to pull
out jammed paper.
