5.3 Platen Gap (Parallelism) Adjustment

The platen gap (parallellism) adjustment ensures that the printhead is
set at the proper distance from the paper. Make the adjustment if:
T
You have loosened or adjusted the left or right parallelism
adjustment bushing.
T
You have removed or replaced the carriage guide shaft, as
when:
• Lubricating the carriage guide shaft.
• Replacing the felt oil pad on the bottom of the carriage.
• Removing or replacing the carriage unit.
Follow these steps to adjust and then check the platen gap:

5.3.1 Adjusting the Platen Gap

1. Remove the upper case. (See
Removal"
on page 91.)
2. Loosen the screws fixing the right and left parallelism adjustment
bushings. (See
Figure
5-49.) Then set the bushings to the center
position of their adjustable range.
C A U T I O N
Pull outward on the bushing's tab before rotating the
bushing, or you may damage the plastic teeth. See
Figure
5-51.

3. Make sure either partially used or empty ink cartridges are installed,
and then close the ink cartridge clamps.
NOTE: You do not have to perform the ink cartridge initialization.
The cartridges are to weight the carriage only.
4. If the carriage is locked, release the carriage lock from the back of
the printer mechanism. (See
Chapter 5 Adjustments
