6. Hardware Configurations
Controller Enclosure

Component

This section explains the components (excluding the controller) in the controller enclosure.

PCIe Flash Module (PFM) (ETERNUS DX500 S5/DX600 S5/DX900 S5)
A PFM is a module that is installed to operate the Extreme Cache function.
The read cache capacity significantly increases when Extreme Cache is used. PCIe Flash Modules (PFM) are
installed in the controller enclosures to operate Extreme Cache.
1.6TB and 3.2TB PFM capacity options are available for Extreme Cache. Up to eight PFMs can be installed in each
controller enclosure. Slot 16 to Slot 23 are shared by the drives and the PFMs. The maximum capacity of each
controller enclosure is 25.6TB.
PFMs can be added during system operation. When an error occurs, a replacement can be made while the
system is running.

Battery (ETERNUS DX500 S5/DX600 S5/DX900 S5)
Two batteries are installed in the controller enclosure as backup power supply sources in case of power outage.
The batteries are charged from an external power source while the ETERNUS DX is running normally. If a power
failure is detected, the cache data in the system memory is saved to the BUD in the controller by using battery
power. There is no limit to the post-failure data retention time.

Power Supply Units
There are two types of the power supply units: AC power type and DC power type. The AC power type power
supply unit converts input AC power from a power socket to DC power and supplies power to each component. A
controller enclosure has two power supply units. Each power supply unit contains fans.
If one of the power supply units fails, the failed unit can be replaced while the system is running.
