Tailgate
Only drive with the tailgate closed
as otherwise exhaust fumes may
enter the vehicle interior.
The rear license plate can be seen
correctly only when the tailgate is
closed.
To close the tailgate, press down
on the grip until the tailgate latch
engages. It is not necessary to
slam the tailgate closed, a pneu­
matic power-assisted mechanism
will latch the tailgate quietly and
automatically. When the pneuma­
tic power-assisted mechanism has
stopped, the tailgate can be
reopened.
Warning!
To prevent possible personal
injury, always keep hands and
fingers away from the tailgate
opening when closing the tail­
gate. The pneumatic power-
assist mechanism cannot be
interrupted once it has been
engaged.
To prevent personal injury,
never activate the closing
assist mechanism by tamper­
ing with the tailgate latch.
Important!
In case of danger, the closed
tailgate can be opened with the
inside or outside lock button.
A locked tailgate can only be
opened with the key.
The rear compartment lamp will
be switched off by the contact
switch only if the tailgate is fully
closed.
Notes:
Lock tailgate with key, or from
inside with the central locking
system, prior to washing the
vehicle in an automatic car wash
Otherwise the washing brush
could depress the button and
cause it to open.
When opening the tailgate com­
pletely, always make sure that
there is sufficient overhead clear­
ance.
Central Locking System
The entire vehicle may be locked
or unlocked with the central
locking system by:
Using the master or valet key in
either front door.
Using the master key in the
tailgate lock.
Pushing down or pulling up the
interior door lock button at
either front door or at the
tailgate.
The central locking system locks
or unlocks all doors, tailgate and
fuel filler flap simultaneously.
Doors
When you lock the car, all buttons
for door locks and tailgate move
down. If any one stays up, the
respective door is not properly
closed. You should then unlock
the car, open and reclose this
door, and lock the car again.
The central locking system can be
engaged from the lock buttons at
the driver's door (provided the
door is completely closed) and the
tailgate. It can also be engaged
from the front passenger door, if
the ignition key is removed or if
