Exposure compensation means to purposefully change the exposure specified by the camera.
It is used when the background is either too bright or too dark.
When taking a photo with an extremely
bright background such as a lot of snow.
When the background is too dark, the subject
such as a portrait in a lit by a spot light, is

washed out.
