W hen the engine is at operating
tem perature (coolant tem perature
above approx. 158° F = 70° C) the
preglowing indicator light comes
on only briefly. The engine can be
started immediately.
Turn key clockw ise to the stop to
start the engine. Release key only
when the engine is running
sm oothly.
A t am bient tem peratures o f less
than —4° F ( —20° C), depress the
accelerator three tim es prior to
starting.
A t am bient tem peratures below
+ 59° F ( + 15° C) and w ith the
engine cold, depress accelerator at
least half o f its travel w hile
starting.
A t am bient tem peratures below
+ 23° F ( —5° C) and w ith the
engine cold, depress clutch pedal
com pletely and the accelerator at
least half o f its travel w hile starting.
If the engine has not started after
approx. 20 secs, discontinue the
starting procedure and return key
to position "0".
This need not be done if the engine
has started firing. The starter may
then be engaged even longer.
Do not exhaust battery.
A fte r an unsuccessful starting
attem pt, repeat the entire starting
procedure.
W hen the engine has started firing,
adjust idle speed as follow s:
A m bient tem perature below
+ 59° F ( + 15° C) and engine
cold: Turn idle speed adjuster
knob clockw ise until the engine
ju st runs sm oothly.
A m bient tem perature above
+ 59° F ( + 15° C): A fte r
approx. 10 secs, turn idle speed
adjuster knob clockw ise to the
stop.
W ith the engine at operating te m ­
perature the idle speed adjuster
knob should be returned clockw ise
to the stop (normal position).
S tarting and Turning o ff th e Engine
Observe the oil pressure gauge
im m ediately after starting the
engine. In a very cold engine the
oil pressure w ill only rise slowly,
some tim e after the engine has
started. Do not speed up the
engine before pressure is registered
on the pressure gauge.
The charge indicator light m ust go
out as soon as the engine has
started.
Turning o ff
Turn key in steering lock to posi­
tion "0 " and remove only when the
vehicle has stopped.
Should the engine continue to
operate in steering lock posi­
tion "0 ", refer to page 73.
W ith very high coolant tem pera­
tures (e.g. after driving on steep
inclines), do not shut dow n the
engine im m ediately but allow to
run at slightly increased idle speed
for another 1 — 2 m inutes approxi­
mately.
