The First 1,000 M iles (1,500 km )
The more cautiously you treat your
engine during the break-in period,
the more satisfied you w ill be w ith
its perform ance later on. Therefore,
drive your vehicle during the first
1,000 miles (1,500 km) at moderate
vehicle and engine speeds.
During this period, avoid heavy
loads (full th ro ttle driving) and high
RPMs (no more than 2 / 3 o f m axi­
mum permissible speed in each
gear) and do not force the engine
to labor at low engine speed.

On vehicles w ith autom atic trans­
mission, avoid accelerating by kick-
dow n. It is not recommended to
brake vehicle by means of manu­
ally shifting to a lower gear. W e re­
com m end to select positions "S "
or "L " only at moderate speeds (for
hill driving).

Have your car winterized in a
MERCEDES-BENZ service station
before the onset o f w inter.
• Engine oil change: If no "all-
year round" engine oil is used,
fill w ith recommended w inte r
oil. For viscosity and capacity,
refer to "Fuels, Coolants, Lu­
bricants, etc. and last page".
• For diesel fuels, refer to page 85
and last page.
• Antifreeze in the coolant:
Check antifreeze protection
periodically. For capacity refer
to "Fuels, Coolants, Lubricants,
etc.".
• A dditive in the windshield
washer system: Add w indshield
washer solvent to the w ater in
the w indshield washer system.
• Test battery: Battery capacity
drops w ith decreasing ambient
tem perature. A well charged
battery ensures that the engine
can always be started, even at
low am bient temperatures.
• Tires: For the cold season we
recommend m ounting M + S
radial-ply tires on all wheels.
Permissible top speed for
M + S radial-ply tires is
100 miles/h (160 km /h).
