Passive safety

The passive safety of the SLS AMG reaches the tradi-
tionally high standards typical of Mercedes, e.g.
through the use of a newly developed aluminum
spaceframe, but with less weight. This was achieved in
combination with further developed safety systems
and components.
The passive safety system of the SLS AMG includes:
• Aluminum spaceframe with a special front and rear
end structure and a highly rigid passenger safety
cell
• The design of the aluminum space frame gives the
vehicle an almost torsion-free body structure
• Large, low cross-sectional areas of the aluminum
profiles provide a high section modulus
• Cockpit crossmember made out of extruded
aluminum section between the A-pillars
• Compact V8 gasoline engine, mounted on a bolted
frame-type integral support which deforms in the
direction of impact
• Several parallel load paths for improved load distri-
bution in the event of a partial head-on collision
• Strut installed under the wind deflector from the
spring tower to the crossmember to reduce
movement of the shock absorber tower and
prevent the pedals from being pushed backwards
as a result

• Use of a crash joint between fender and driver door
to prevent the fender and driver door from
overlapping and to reduce the required door
opening force after an impact
• Pyrofuse in the prefuse box that isolates the starter
and alternator lines from the battery in certain
accident situations
• Armrests and assist handles on door trim have
been strengthened by additional safety measures
• Telescoping steering column
• Gullwing doors with reinforced section
• PERFORMANCE-sport steering wheel with foamed
rim
The occupant restraint systems include:
• Three-point seat belts for driver and front
passenger seats
• Seat belt emergency tensioning retractors and belt
force limiters for driver and front passenger
• Crash-active exit aid
• Seat belt reminder warning for driver and front
passenger
• Front passenger seat occupied recognition sensor
Other safety measures include:
• Crash-active emergency illumination
• Pedestrian protection through the deliberate
creation of free spaces and deforming parts on the
front section
