Electric parking brake

The electric parking brake actuates the parking brake
on the rear axle using two cables via an electric motor
integrated in the controller unit.
Activation either takes place manually via the electric
parking brake switch on the left of the instrument
panel next to the sport steering wheel or if position P
cannot be engaged in the transmission due to a trans-
mission fault.
Emergency braking
If the electric parking brake switch is actuated while
driving, emergency braking is immediately performed
via the service brake.
If a malfunction of the service brake occurs during
emergency braking, the emergency brake actuation is
performed solely via the electric parking brake.
For this purpose, the controller unit of the electric
parking brake evaluates the signals from the rpm
sensors on the wheels in order to prevent the rear
wheels from locking up. The signals from the rpm
sensors are transferred to the chassis CAN by the ESP
control unit.
In addition, the controller unit of the electric parking
brake undertakes the brake light actuation. The
parking brake warning lamp on the instrument cluster
lights up.
i Emergency release
In order to release the electric parking brake
manually, there is a release cable (1) in the area of
the left rear lamp unit in the trunk.

Dynamometer test mode
The electric parking brake is equipped with a separate
dynamometer test mode for service purposes.
To activate it, the vehicle must be driven on to a roller
dynamometer and the AMG ESP Sport Off button must
be pressed. This prevents faults from being stored in
the ESP control unit.
The controller unit is activated by pressing the switch
of the electric parking brake. The force is built up
continuously at the brake cables until the maximum
force is applied.
This allows the deceleration values of the parking
brake to be recorded and the parking brake can be
eased if necessary. This procedure can be repeated up
to three times, but a cooling-down time of several
minutes must be allowed in between the brake appli-
cations.
