Replacing the system board

Attention: Do not open your computer or attempt any repair before reading and understanding the Chapter
1 "Read this first: Important safety information" on page 1.
Note: Each computer has a unique Vital Product Data (VPD) code stored in the nonvolatile memory on
the system board. After you replace the system board, the VPD must be updated. To update the VPD,
see "Updating the BIOS" on page 67.
To replace the system board, do the following:
1. Remove any media from the drives and turn off all connected devices and the computer. Then,
disconnect all power cords from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connected to the
computer.
2. Remove the computer stand. See "Replacing the computer stand" on page 89.
3. Remove the computer cover. See "Removing the computer cover" on page 94.
4. Remove the system board shield. See "Replacing the system board shield" on page 96.
5. Remove the heat sink. See "Replacing the heat sink" on page 99.
6. Remove the memory modules. See "Replacing a memory module" on page 101.
7. Remove the Wi-Fi card. See "Replacing the M.2 Wi-Fi card" on page 97.
8. Make a record of the cable routing and cable connections, and then disconnect all cables from the
system board. See "Parts on the system board" on page 34.
9. Remove the seven screws that secure the system board, and then carefully lift the system board out of
the chassis.
Note: Carefully handle the system board by its edges.

10. To install the new system board, align the seven screw holes in the system board with the corresponding
holes in the chassis. Then, install the seven screws to secure the system board to the chassis.
11. Route all the cables that you disconnected from the system board, and then connect the cables to the
system board. See "Parts on the system board" on page 34.
12. Install the Wi-Fi card. See "Replacing the M.2 Wi-Fi card" on page 97.
13. Install the memory modules. See "Replacing a memory module" on page 101.
14. Install the heat sink. See "Replacing the heat sink" on page 99.
