Pry the cap (5) out of the starter
grip.

Remove the remainder of the rope
from the rope rotor and starter
handle – make certain that the
sleeve is not pushed out of the grip
N
Make an overhand knot in the new
starter rope and pull it through the
starter grip and the rope sleeve (6)
N
Refit the cap in the grip
N
Pull the starter rope through the
rope rotor and secure it with an
overhand knot
N
Coat the bearing bore in the rope
rotor with non-resinous oil
N
Slip the rope rotor onto the starter
post – turn it back-and forth a little
until the anchor loop of the rewind
spring engages

Refit the pawl (4) in the rope rotor
N
Place the washer (3) on the starter
post
N
Press the spring clip (2) on to the
starter post and over the pegs of the
pawl with a screwdriver or suitable
pliers – the spring clip must point in
the clockwise direction – as in the
picture
Tensioning the rewind spring
N
Make a loop in the unwound starter
rope and use it to turn the rope rotor
six full revolutions in the direction of
the arrow
N
Hold the rope rotor tight
N
Pull out the twisted rope and
untangle it
N
Release the rope rotor
N
Slowly let go of rope so that it winds
onto the rotor
The starter grip must be drawn firmly
into the rope guide bush. If it tips
sideways: increase the spring tension by
another turn.
When the starter rope is fully extended it
must be possible to rotate the rotor at
least another half turn. If this is not
possible, the spring is overtensioned –
risk of breakage!

Remove one turn of the rope from
the rotor
Replacing broken rewind spring
N
Remove the rope rotor
The broken pieces of spring may
still be under tension and can
spring apart unexpectedly on
removal from the housing – risk of
injury! Wear a face shield and
protective gloves.

Carefully pry out the broken pieces
of spring with a screwdriver
N
Apply a few drops of non-resinous
oil to the new replacement spring
N
Depending on version, position the
replacement spring with frame in the
fan housing – the anchor loop must
be located over the retaining lug in
the housing
