It is best to burn the wood
load down to a glowing coal
bed as often as possible
to dry the rebox,
air channels and ashes.
Low humidity
Wood between 4" and 8" (10-20 cm)
across and approximately
60-70% of the length of the
rebox works well in most cases.
Adding more wood than is needed between loads increases condensation and reduces e ciency.
A rebox with high humidity requires more maintenance, operates with less e ciency and will shorten the life of the furnace.
Loading more wood than is needed between

and air channels will not dry
These illustrations provide a summary of how to properly load and reload your downdraft outdoor furnace. Be sure to read the Owner's Manual for other important safety
and operational information. Over time, you will become familiar with your particular conditions, and you will learn how best to load the wood so it burns down to a
Section 2 - Operating Instructions
Operating for a 12-Hour Burn
Load enough wood to maintain the re until next reloading,
preferably about 12 hours

Radiant heat from glowing ember bed dries
and cleans air channels, and
also will ignite new wood load
High humidity
NO DRYING
Very little radiant heat
to dry air channels
Reloading at this level can restrict air ow and
create excessive coals or too deep of a coal bed,
while making it impossible to run the cleaning
rod through to loosen the ash and coals

remaining wood is allowed

Run the rod through
the coal bed in a
number of places once
every 8-12 hours to
avoid bridging and
to help optimize
combustion.
A dry rebox lasts
longer, requires less
maintenance and
operates with more
e ciency than a
wet rebox.
Repeating this type of reloading pattern, along with
not following other procedures described in the
Owner's Manual and instructional videos,
will diminish the e ciency, performance and life
of the furnace
Coal bed is too deep
to allow enough air
to keep the bottom of
bed glowing, which
is needed for
proper operation.
