HVLP Spray Equipment/Finish Troubleshooting
Problem
Filter warning light on.
No trigger pull.
Unit has no power.
Cup doesn't pressurize.
Excessive arcing/sparking.
Finish Troubleshooting:
Orange peel.
Dry spray with lacquer.
Runs and sags.
Pinholing and solvent pops.
Fish eyes.
Blistering.
Lumpy, coarse surface.
Mottled surface finish.
Air filters clogged.
Material adjustment knob too tight.
Blown fuse/tripped breaker reset.
Worn cup gasket.
Cup ears bent.
Worn turbine brushes.
Damaged commutator.
Paint drying too fast.
Gun too far from surface.
Material too heavy.
Solvent flash too fast.
Material too thin.
Moving gun too slow.
Too much material.
Trapped solvents.
Pigment settling.
System contamination.
Possible silicone contamination.
Moisture in/on spray surface.
Incompatible topcoats or undercoats.
Dirt on spray surface.
Too much thinner.
Poor spray technique.
Note: For fast-drying automotive materials and some lacquers, prepare material to be
sprayed according to manufacturer's recommendation. The hot air produced by the
turbine quickly dries the solvents required to thin these materials. We recommend
that you thin these materials 5% to 10% more than the recommended instructions
of the manufacturer, or use a retarder.

Cause Solution
Clean or replace filters.
Turn counter-clockwise.
Check and replace fuse.
Replace.
Straighten (do not over-tighten).
Replace brushes.
Replace turbine motor.
Use slower solvent or retarder.
Move closer.
Reduce viscosity. Try Paint Mate
as an additive for latex.
Add retarder to slow flash time.
Add unthinned material.
Speed up passes.
Reduce material flow by adjusting
material adjustment knob.
Apply material in lighter coats allowing
solvents time to evaporate.
Possible bad product. Replace.
Thoroughly clean all parts.
Use solvent to clean all parts.
Dry surface completely.
Ensure coatings' compatibility.
Thoroughly clean surface.
Reduce thinner.
Always square gun with spray surface.
