10.3 Driving the Tractor and Boom

Inspect the area to be mowed before beginning operation. Identify any drop- offs, slopes, holes, hidden
obstructions or similar obstacle that could cause the tractor to loose stability and potential roll-over. Mark and
avoid the item or the entire area.
Start off driving at a slow speed and gradually increase your speed while maintaining complete control of the
tractor. Never operate the tractor at speed s that cannot be safely handled or which will prevent the operator
from stopping quickly during an emergency. If the power steering or engine ceases operating, stop the tractor
immediately as the tractor will be difficult to control.
Perform turns with the tra ctor and mower at slow
speeds to determine how the tractor with and
attached implement handles a turn. Determine the
safe speed to maintain proper control of the tr actor
w h e n m a k i n g t u r n s . W h e n t u r n i n g w i t h t h e
implement the overall working length and width of
the unit is increased. Allow additional clearance for
the un it whe n turn ing or whe n passing larg e
obstructions.
To avoid overturns, drive the tractor with care and
at safe speeds, especially when operating over
rough ground, crossing ditches or slopes, and
turning co rners. Use e xtreme caution when
operating on steep slopes. Keep the tractor in a low
gear when going downhill. DO NOT coast or free-
wheel downhill.

Never Leave the mower unattended while the head is in the raise d
position. The mower could fall causing serious injury to anyone who
might inadvertently be under the mower
Always keep a careful lookout and use extreme care when working
around overhead obstructions. Never allow the Mower h ead or boom
within 10 feet of an y power line. Whe n working close to overhead
power lines consult your electric company for a safe code of operation.
