Troubleshooting
Where do I find the unit identification number?
•
The unit identification (UNIT-ID) is a 10-digit number and is found on the GPS-unit
•
It is NOT identical with the imprinted GPS serial number, which is 8-didgits.
•
The Unit-ID can be read from a connected unit via the Map Source software
"TOOLS – Get Unit-ID"
Unsuccessful Connection to the GPS-unit
Serial Connection:
•
Check serial cable connection
•
Check the settings of the port on the GPS-unit: GARMIN e.g. HOST-Modus
•
Choose appropriate COM-Port if necessary via "search unit" (see Data/information transfer on the GPS-unit)
•
ATTENTION to USB-serial port converter:
Many new PCs, especially laptops, do not have a COM-port anymore. There are special converters in case you
want to connect your GPS-unit to you PC via a serial cable. In this case, please check the Windows-Unit-Manager
to see which COM-port is set for the USB-converter and if necessary, set these properties. COM-ports between
1 and 8 are suggested.
USB Connection:
•
Check USB-cable connection
•
The GARMIN USB-GPS-driver must be installed correctly (please check the correct installation process in the
Windows-Unit-Manager)- if necessary, install the driver from the TOPO-CD or download the updated driver from the
GARMIN Homepage (www.garmin.com/support/download.jsp)
•
Turn off the GPS briefly off - then back on again and check whether the USB-GBS is recognized correctly in the
Windows-Hardware-Manager
Termination of Data Transmittance
Serial connection:
If the transmission of data becomes disconnected during the operation, it may be due to a failing cable or plug connection:
check the hub of the plug and restart the transfer.
USB-connection:
If the transmission of data in the running operation becomes disconnected, the problem is often caused by
•
a defect in the USB cable: please change the cable
•
invalid driver-installation: reinstall GARMIN-USB-GPS driver (see "no connection to GPS-unit")
•
Connection to the USB-hub. Some USB-hubs cause problems, please connect the GPS-unit directly to the PC's
USB plug for the period of time it takes to transmit the data directed onto your PC
