OPERATING YOUR HOME TERMINAL (cont.)

Making HDTV-display settings

You use the display button and the front-panel display to set the appropriate screen resolution and
aspect ratio for your TV. Higher screen resolutions result in better quality pictures. Aspect (width-to-
height) ratio of your TV screen can be 4:3 or 16:9 (widescreen). You can also set closed captioning.
Setting the screen resolution
The resolution settings affect the output at the DVI and component video (YPbPr) connectors.
To set the screen resolution, you must use the front-panel buttons, not the remote control.
1. Press the display button to show HdSd on the front-panel display.
2. Press the "select" button (marked +) to display the first resolution (480i).
3. Press ch+ and ch– to cycle through the available resolutions: 480i, 480P, 720P, 1080 and
PASS (when the current setting is shown, HDTV lights up above the display).
4. To change the screen resolution, display the resolution you want on the front-panel display, then
press the "select" button (marked +) to save the setting. If you do not wish to make any changes,
press exit until the time or channel number appears in the display.
Note that 480i is standard definition NTSC, 480P is enhanced digital TV and 720P and 1080 (in fact,
1080i) are HDTV. Generally, the output at the DVI or YPbPr connector will be at the resolution you
set, irrespective of the resolution of the video source. The main exception to this is the setting PASS,
which passes though the source resolution unchanged (except that 480i is converted to 480P).
The output at the VIDEO OUT and S-VIDEO OUT jacks will always be the standard definition 480i,
no matter what resolution you set or what the resolution of the video source is. Unless you set the
resolution to 480i, there will be no graphics (menus, program guide etc.) at VIDEO OUT and
S-VIDEO OUT. Generally, these are connected to a VCR, so you will not want graphics anyway. The
16
setting 480i gives no output at the DVI connector and may not work at the YPbPr jacks of some TVs.
