INSTALLATION - REVISED BUILDING REGULATIONS
Heating Controls To Comply With The Revised Building Regulations (Part L For England. Part J for
Scotland).
New Dwelling
1. The installation must be a fully pumped system.
2. Independent temperature and time controls for both heating and domestic hot water.
3. Controls to interlock with the boiler. TRV’s alone do not comply.
4. An automatic bypass must be used if a bypass is required. Gate-valves do not comply.
5. Split heating circuits into zones: -
a. Room thermostat or programmable room thermostats in all zones.
b. A room thermostat or programmable room thermostats in the main zone and TRV’s in all other
zones.
6. Cylinder thermostat and zone valve to control stored hot water. Non-electric hot water controllers do not
comply.
7. Timed controller for heating and hot water must be provided.
8. A minimum of 2 zones for heating floor spaces greater than 150m
9. Boiler management control systems meeting specific zoning, timing and temperature requirements are
acceptable.
Existing Dwellings
When a new installation is fitted, the controls must be as for a new dwelling.
When replacing the boiler and/or hot water vessel, the opportunity to improve the controls should be considered
to be confident that the requirements of the Building Regulations are met.
