Short (<100 ft (30.5 m)) vs. Long (>75 ft (22.9 m)) Motor Lead Adjustment
Depending on the type and length of cable used between the KBDA fan controller and fan motor, conditions can exist in the system that
the drive will interpret as a fault condition. Upon intial startup of a fan system utilizing the KBDA controller, the controller may trip on the
following fault codes:
Overvoltage Trip. The controller has seen a voltage level on the internal DC Buss that exceeds acceptable ranges. This
condition, while intended to warn of incoming AC line voltage problems, can also indicate that a large amount of energy is
reflecting back to the fan controller due to high frequency cable charging.
Overload Trip (I
This condition is meant to indicate that the load is pulling more current than is normal (usually reserved for full speed
operation). If this code is experienced at any speed other than full speed, it can indicate that the cable system is absorbing too much of
the fan controller's output current, again, via high frequency cable charging.
Short Circuit. The controller sees an electrical short circuit between motor phases or between one phase and ground.
This fault can also indicate that too much current is flowing capacitively in the motor lead system due to high frequency
carrier output on the fan controller.
All of these conditions can be addressed by programming in the KBDA fan controller as it is provided from the factory with two sets of
default parameters. Toggling between these two (2) sets of parameters will, in most cases, address the problems associated with longer
sets of cable leads.
