Troubleshooting

If you are having a problem with your unit, check this list for a possible solution before calling for service.
If you cannot solve the problem from the hints given here, or the unit has been physically damaged, call a qualified person, such as your
dealer, for service.
Symptom
Display demonstration automatically
restarts in certain intervals.
No sound is heard.
Hard to listen to broadcasts because of
noise.
The disc sound is discontinuous.
Disc tray does not open or close.
The disc does not play.
Impossible to turn off Dolby Pro Logic
while playing back a disc.
No picture appears on the screen.
No picture is displayed on the TV screen,
the picture is blurred, or the picture is
divided into two parts.
DVD does not play back.
The left and right edges of the picture are
missing on the screen.
No subtitle appears on the display though
you have selected the initial subtitle
language.
Audio language is different from the one
you have selected as the initial audio
language.
Impossible to record.
Stereo effect is lost.
The disc playback sounds strange.
Operations are disabled.
Unable to operate the unit from the remote
control.

Cause
The display demonstration is not yet
canceled.
Connections are incorrect or loose.
Antennas are disconnected.
• The AM loop antenna is too close to the
unit.
• The FM antenna is not properly extended
and positioned.
The disc is scratched or dirty.
The AC power cord is not plugged in.
Trays are locked.
The disc is placed upside down.
"ON" is selected as SURROUND
SETTING.
The video cord is not connected correctly.
Incorrect color system is selected.
An incorrect input has been selected on the
TV or monitor.
The PROGRESSIVE lamp are flashing
though the unit is connected to a TV which
does not support progressive video input,
such as a conventional TV.
The color system is not set correctly.
Parental lock is in use.
"4:3 PS" is selected when viewing on a
conventional TV (aspect ratio 4:3).
Small tabs on the top of the cassette are
removed.
Karaoke is activated.
The key control has been adjusted.
The built-in microprocessor may
malfunction due to external electrical
interference.
The path between the remote control and the
remote sensor on the unit is blocked.
The batteries are exhausted.
Action
Press CANCEL/DEMO on the front panel.

Check all connections and make
corrections. (See pages 6 to 10.)
Reconnect the antennas correctly and
securely.
• Change the position and direction of the
AM loop antenna.
• Extend the FM antenna at the best
position.
Clean or replace the disc. (See page 70.)
Plug the AC power cord.
Unlock the trays. (See page 17.)
Place the disc with the label side up.
Change the SURROUND SETTING to
"AUTO" or "OFF." (See page 62.)
Connect the video cord correctly.
Select correct color system (See page 8.)
Select the correct input on the TV or
monitor.
Press PROGRESSIVE until "INTERLACE"
appears on the display. (See page 17.)
Change the color system. (See page 8.)
Unlock the parental lock. (See page 65.)
Select "4:3 LB." (See pages 11 and 61.)
Some DVDs are programed to always
display no subtitle initially. If this happens,
press SUBTITLE after starting play. (See
pages 40 and 61.)
Some DVDs are programed to always use
the original language initially. If this
happens, press AUDIO after starting play.
(See page 41.)
Cover the holes with adhesive tape.
Cancel the Karaoke mode. (See page 50.)
Cancel the Key control. (See page 50.)
Unplug the AC power cord and then plug it
back in.
Remove the obstruction.
Replace the batteries.
