Virtual Terminal
Protocols
A virtual terminal protocol is a software program, such as rlogin or telnet,
that allows you to establish a management session from a PC or a UNIX
workstation. Because rlogin and telnet run over TCP/IP, you must have at
least one IP address configured on the LANplex system before you can
establish access to it with a virtual terminal protocol. Within the
Administration Console, you configure an IP address by defining an IP
interface.
Terminal emulation differs from a virtual terminal protocol in that you must
connect a terminal directly to the serial line.
Figure 3-2 shows a UNIX workstation connecting to a LANplex system
through a virtual terminal protocol and a terminal connecting directly
through a null modem cable.
