    PoE Features The twisted pair ports on the AT-FS708/POE switch offer the same features and functionality as the twisted pair ports on the other switches in the series. As such, they can operate at 10 or 100 Mbps, feature Auto- Negotiation and Auto-MDI/MDI-X, and so forth.

    The PoE implementation on the AT-FS708/POE switch transmits power over the same strands that carry the network traffic. The power transfer does not interfere with the network traffic. The power and the network traffic can coexist on the same strands simultaneously.

    SFP Expansion The AT-FS708/POE switch has one SFP expansion slot that can accommodate one optional Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) Slot transceiver module, also referred to as a mini-GBIC.

    Chapter 1: Product Description LEDs The system and port LEDs on the front panel of the AT-FS708/POE switch display the switch and its port status information. Each port has two LEDs. Table 1 describes the system and twisted pair port LEDs on the AT-FS708/POE Fast Ethernet switch.

    AT-FS708/POE Fast Ethernet Switch Installation Guide AC Power The AT-FS708/POE Fast Ethernet switch has a single AC power supply socket on the back panel, which has an auto-switch AC inputs. Refer to Connector Appendix A, “Technical Specifications” on page 42, for the input voltage range.

  • Page 20: A Few Ethernet Switching Basics

    NIC already has a MAC address assigned to it by its manufacturer. The AT-FS708/POE Fast Ethernet switch can contain up to 8,000 entries on its MAC address table. The switch uses the table to store the MAC addresses of the network end-nodes connected to the ports, along with the port number on which each address was learned.

    The twisted pair ports on the AT-FS708/POE switch can operate in half- or full-duplex mode for 10/100 Mbps. They are IEEE 802.3u-compliant and use Auto-Negotiation to set the duplex mode setting for you automatically.

Refer to “Translated Safety Statements” on page 45 for translated safety statements in your language.

    Selecting a Site for the Switch Observe the following requirements when choosing a site for the AT-FS708/POE Fast Ethernet Switch: If you plan to install the switch in an equipment rack, be sure that the rack is safely secured and that it will not tip over. Devices in a rack should be installed starting at the bottom, with the heavier devices near the bottom of the rack.

    Chapter 2: Installation Unpacking the Switch To unpack an AT-FS708/POE switch, perform the following procedure: 1. Remove all components from the shipping package. Note Store the packaging material in a safe location. You must use the original shipping material if you need to return the unit to Allied Telesyn.

Remove all the items from the packaging and store the packaging material in a safe place. In the event a problem occurs and you need to return the unit, please use as much of the original shipping material as possible.

    AT-FS708/POE Fast Ethernet Switch Installation Guide Installing an Optional SFP Module To install an optional SFP module in an AT-FS708/POE switch, perform the following procedure: Caution The laser light used by the SFP module is invisible. Standard safety precautions (e.g. avoid looking directly into a fiber optic port) should always be observed when installing or maintaining this product.
  • Page 36 Chapter 2: Installation SFP modules are dust sensitive. Do not remove the dust cover from the port until you are ready to attach the fiber optic cable. The most common source of contaminants in the optical bore is debris picked up on the ferrules of the optical connectors. Use an alcohol swab or wipe to clean the ferrules of the optical connector.
