MICROPHONE PLACEMENT GUIDE FOR
VARIOUS KAWAI GRAND PIANOS
The following placement guidelines were developed specifically for the PR-1 piano microphones. Using other types of
microphones with these guidelines may not produce a good result. If you're piano is different from the models listed below
just select the model that is the closest to your piano as a starting point.
The illustrations below are rough sketches of the beams, when looking at them from underneath a grand piano. The left
side of the illustration shows the upper keys (right) and the right side shows the lower keys (left). Please be aware of this
point when you connect the microphones.
This distance between the microphones and the soundboard should be approximately 7 cm for the left microphone (lower
keys) and 12 cm for the right microphone (upper keys).

If you feel that the sound of the upper keys is too strong, you can adjust the sound by moving the right microphone over one
beam toward the lower keys or by increasing the distance between the soundboard and the microphone.
