The left and right bottom of the pad work as click buttons. The functions correspond to those of the left and right mouse buttons on a conventional mouse. Customizing the ThinkPad pointing device You can customize the ThinkPad pointing device to achieve the extended functions of the ThinkPad pointing device. To customize the ThinkPad pointing device, do the following: 1.
Spend more time unplugged with ThinkPad batteries. Mobility has revolutionized business by allowing you to take your work wherever you go. With ThinkPad batteries, you will be able to work longer without being tied to an electrical outlet.
• For Windows 8: Open the Lenovo Support program and click Battery Health, or open the Lenovo Settings program and click Power. Using the ac power adapter The power to run your computer can come either from the lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery pack provided with it, or from ac power through the ac power adapter.
• Use the battery until the charge is completely depleted; that is, use the battery until the battery status indicator starts blinking orange. • Recharge the battery completely before using it. The battery is fully charged if the battery indicator shows green when the ac power adapter is plugged in.
Enabling the wakeup function If you put your computer into hibernation mode, and the wakeup function is disabled (this is the default setting), the computer does not consume any power. If the wakeup function is enabled, it consumes a small amount of power. To enable the function, do the following: 1.

DANGER Do not attempt to disassemble or modify the battery pack. Attempting to do so can cause an explosion, or liquid leakage from the battery pack. A battery pack other than the one specified by Lenovo, or a disassembled or modified battery pack is not covered by the warranty.
DANGER There is a danger of an explosion if the backup battery is incorrectly placed. The lithium battery contains lithium and can explode if it is not properly handled, or disposed of. Replace only with a battery of the same type. To avoid possible injury or death, do not: (1) throw or immerse into water, (2) allow it to heat to more than 100°C (212°F), or (3) attempt to repair or disassemble it.
Bluetooth Bluetooth is one of a number of technologies used to create a wireless personal area network. Bluetooth can connect devices a short distance from one another, and is commonly used for connecting peripheral devices to a computer, transferring data between hand-held devices and a personal computer, or remotely controlling and communicating with devices such as mobile phones.

Checking the wireless network connection status You can check your computer wireless network connection status and wireless signal strength through the wireless network connection status icon in the Windows notification area. The more bars encompassed, the better the signal. For the Windows 7 operating system, you also can check the Access Connections gauge, the Access Connections status icon, or the Access Connections wireless network connection status icon in the Windows notification area.
– Power to the wireless radio is on. The signal strength of the wireless connection is poor. To improve the signal strength, move your computer closer to the wireless access point. Note: If you have trouble in making a connection, try moving your computer closer to your wireless access point.

Hard disk security To protect passwords from unauthorized security attacks, several of the latest technologies and algorithms are integrated into UEFI BIOS and hardware design of ThinkPad notebook computers.
To prevent leakage of data from the solid-state drive, it is recommended that you delete all data on the flash chips by use of a program provided by Lenovo. This program called the ThinkPad Setup Menu Extension Utility makes it possible to erase all the data on the flash chips of the solid-state drive from the ThinkPad Setup within a minute.

Performing a recovery operation This section provides instructions on how to perform a recovery operation using the Rescue and Recovery program. 1. From the Windows desktop, click Start ➙ All Programs ➙ Lenovo ThinkVantage Tools ➙ Enhanced Backup and Restore. The Rescue and Recovery program opens. 2.

3. In the Boot Menu window, select the USB hard disk drive as the first boot device and press Enter. The rescue medium starts. When the rescue medium starts, the Rescue and Recovery workspace opens. You must first make sure that your rescue device is set as the first boot device in the startup device sequence in the ThinkPad Setup program. See “Startup menu” on page 87 for detailed information about temporarily or permanently changing the startup device sequence.

Note: Avoid spraying cleaner directly onto the display or the keyboard. Cleaning your computer display To clean the computer display, do the following: 1. Gently wipe the display with a dry, soft lint-free cloth. If you see a scratchlike mark on your display, it might be a stain transferred from the keyboard or the TrackPoint pointing stick when the cover was pressed from the outside.
Computer stops responding Print these instructions now and keep it with your computer for reference later. If your computer is completely unresponsive (you cannot use the ThinkPad pointing device or the keyboard), do the following: 1. Press and hold the power button until the computer turns off. After the computer is turned off, restart by pressing the power button.
Note: Do not remove the battery and the ac power adapter to reset the computer. 2. While the computer is turned off, remove all power sources from the computer (battery and the ac power adapter). Hold down the power button for 10 seconds. Plug in the ac power adapter while keeping the battery out of the computer.

Problems with the keyboard and other pointing devices The following are the most common problems with keyboards and other pointing devices. ThinkPad pointing device problems • Problem: The pointer drifts when the computer is turned on or after it resumes normal operation.
Solution: Make sure that the TrackPoint pointing device or touch pad is enabled. Note: To enable the TrackPoint pointing device, open Control Panel and click Hardware and Sound ➙ Mouse, and then click the ThinkPad tab. Keyboard problems • Problem: All or some keys on the keyboard do not work.
To check these settings, do the following: 1. Right-click on the desktop, and click Personalize. 2. Click Display at the left. 3. Select Change display settings. Check whether the screen resolution is correctly set. 4. Click Advanced Settings. 5. Click the Adapter tab. Ensure that the correct device driver name is shown in the adapter information window.

• Problem: When you connect a headphone to your computer while playing sound, a speaker does not produce sound. Solution: Once the headphone is attached, the streaming is automatically redirected to it. If you want to listen to sound from the speakers again, be sure to set those speakers as the default device. 2. Swap batteries with another similar model, if available. If another similar ThinkPad model is available, then verify that the battery pack works in the other computer and that the battery pack for the other model works in this computer.
Connect the ac power adapter to the computer; then press Fn. – If the system status indicator (illuminated ThinkPad logo) is off, your computer is in power-off state or in hibernation mode. Connect the ac power adapter to the computer; then press the power button to resume operation.
• Problem: The hard disk drive does not work. Solution: On the Boot menu of ThinkPad Setup, make sure that the hard disk drive is on the Boot priority order list. If it is on the Excluded from boot order list, it is disabled. Select the entry for it on the list and press the Shift+1 key.
• The necessary device drivers are installed. • The program works when it is run on some other computer. If an error message is displayed while you are using the program, refer to the manuals supplied with the program. If the program still does not run correctly, contact your place of purchase or a service representative for help.
