Troubleshooting guide

Before requesting service, check the below items. If you have doubt about the check points, or if the remedies indicated in the chart do not
solve the problem, consult your dealer.
Power
No power
The unit is on but cannot be
operated.
The unit switches to standby
automatically.
Cannot eject a disc.
Picture
TV reception worsens after
connecting the unit.
Screen size is wrong.
The picture flickers.
On-screen messages do not
appear.
The grey background does not
appear.
Sound
No sound.
Low volume.
Distorted sound.
Cannot hear the desired audio type. ≥Press [AUDIO] on the remote control to select the desired audio type.
Cannot switch audio during stereo
or NICAM broadcasts.
≥Insert the AC mains lead securely into the household AC outlet.
≥The unit is hot ("U14" appears on the display).
Wait until "U14" disappears.
≥Recording drive or playback drive have not been selected properly.
≥One of the unit's safety devices may have activated.
Reset the unit as follows:
(1) Press [Í/I] on the main unit to switch to standby.
If the unit doesn't switch to standby, press and hold [Í/I] for about 10 seconds. The unit is
forcibly switched to standby.
Alternatively, disconnect the AC mains lead, wait one minute, then reconnect it.
(2) Press [Í/I] to turn the unit on.
≥One of the unit's safety devices may have activated.
Press [Í/I] to turn the unit on.
≥Press [Í/I] to turn the unit off. Hold down [∫, STOP] and [CH, W] on the main unit simultaneously
for about 5 seconds.
≥This can occur because the signals are being divided between the unit and the TV.
It can be solved by using a signal booster, available from audio-visual suppliers.
Consult your dealer if reception does not improve.
≥Due to inherent characteristics of the HDD, the picture may occasionally be disturbed.
This is normal.
≥Check the settings on your TV.
≥Check the settings for "TV Aspect", "Norm (4:3) TV Settings (DVD-Video)" or "Norm (4:3)
TV Settings (DVD-RAM)" in the Connection menu.
≥Adjust the TV's vertical frequency. Read the TV's operating instructions or consult your
dealer.
≥Go to Display in the SETUP menus and select "Automatic" for "On-Screen Messages".
Press [STATUS] to show the on-screen messages constantly.
≥Go to Display in the SETUP menus and select "On" for "Grey Background".
≥Check the connections.
≥Check the input mode on the amplifier if you have connected it.
≥Turn V.S.S. OFF.
[DVD-R]
≥Go to Sound in the SETUP menus and choose the correct setting with "Bilingual Audio
Selection".
≥If "D.MIX" does not appear in the display when playing multi-channel DVD-Audio, audio
output will be the front two speakers only.
≥You cannot change the DVD-Audio audio type if the software producer has restricted play
in stereo.
≥The audio cannot be switched (The audio can be selected in "Bilingual Audio Selection"
before recording.)
- When a DVD-R disc is inserted in the disc tray while DVD drive is selected.
- When the recording mode is set to "XP" and "Audio Mode for XP Recording" is set to
"LPCM".
- When "DVD-R Rec for High Speed mode" is set to "On".
≥You have used digital connection. Connect to other equipment using audio cables
(analog connection).
≥The audio may not be changed in some discs due to the control by the producer of the
material.
≥The audio for the SD VIDEO (MPEG4) is monaural.
