    1 Introduction Thank you for purchasing a Xantrex XPower Charger 2. The XPower Charger 2 is part of a family of ultra-compact, light weight and modern power inverters and chargers from Xantrex Technology. About the XPower Charger 2 The 2 amp XPower Charger 2 is designed to charge 12 volt rechargeable batteries.

    Warnings and Cautions WARNING: This guide contains important safety and operating instructions in how to use the XPower Charger 2, to recharge 12 volt batteries. Read this guide fully for safe operation of this charger. Save this guide for future reference.
  • Page 7 Do not expose the XPower Charger 2 to rain or snow. Use of an attachment not recommended may result in a risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to persons.
  • Page 8 Do not operate XPower Charger 2 with damaged cord or plug—replace the cord or plug immediately. Do not operate XPower Charger 2 if it has received a sharp blow, been dropped, or otherwise damaged in any way; take it to a qualified service technician.

    WARNING: Risk of explosive gases Working in the vicinity of a lead-acid battery is dangerous. Batteries generate explosive gases during normal battery operation. For this reason, it is of utmost importance that each time before using a battery charger, you read this guide and follow the instructions exactly.
  • Page 10 Use XPower Charger 2 for charging a LEAD-ACID battery only. It is only intended to charge lead-acid batteries or batteries, such as those used in specific integrated products.

    Preparing to Charge If necessary to remove the battery from the vehicle to charge, always remove the grounded terminal from the battery first. Make sure all accessories in the vehicle are off, so to minimize chances of an arc. Be sure area around the battery is well- ventilated while battery is being charged.

    Charger Location Place the battery charger as far away from the battery as the output DC cable permits. Never place the battery charger directly above a battery being charged; gases from battery will corrode and damage the charger. Never allow battery acid to drip on the charger when reading specific gravity or filling battery.

  • Page 18: Charging A 12 Volt Battery

    4 Charging a 12 volt Battery It is possible to use XPower Charger 2 to charge most engine starting batteries when the battery is installed in a vehicle. Before attempting to charge a vehicle battery, make sure the battery is a 12 volt, lead-acid type.

    Stay clear of fan blades, belts, pulleys, and other parts that can cause injury to persons. Connect the XPower Charger 2 DC cable to the battery clip adapter. Check the polarity of the battery posts. The POSITIVE (POS, P, +) battery post usually has a larger diameter than the NEGATIVE (NEG, N, –) post.

  • Page 23 Attach an insulated battery cable, at least 24-inches long, 6 gauge (AWG) to the NEGATIVE (NEG, N, –) battery post. Connect the XPower Charger 2 DC cable to the battery clips adapter. Connect the POSITIVE (RED) charge clip to the POSITIVE (POS, P, +) battery post.

    Using the Ring Terminal Adapter Follow these steps to install the ring terminal adapter: CAUTION Be sure the safety cap on the ring terminal adapter is put on before installing the adapter to the battery terminal. The ring terminal adapter’s leads have crimped, color-coded ring terminals (RED - POSITIVE and BLACK - NEGATIVE).
