TAKING CARE OF UNEXPECTED PROBLEMS

ENGINE WILL NOT
START
1.
Electric starting
(applicable types):
Check battery and fuse.
2.
Check control
positions.
3.
Check fuel.
4.
Remove and inspect
spark plug.

Take engine to an
authorized Honda
servicing dealer, or
refer to shop manual.
ENGINE LACKS
POWER
1.
Check air filter.
2.
Check fuel.
3.
Take engine to an
authorized Honda
servicing dealer, or
refer to shop manual.

Possible Cause
Battery discharged.
Fuse burnt out.
Fuel valve OFF.
Choke OPEN.
Engine switch OFF.
Out of fuel.
Bad fuel; engine stored
without treating or
draining gasoline, or
refueled with bad
gasoline.
Spark plug faulty,
fouled, or improperly
gapped.
Spark plug wet with
fuel (flooded engine).
Fuel filter clogged,
carburetor malfunction,
ignition malfunction,
valves stuck, etc.
Possible Cause
Filter element(s)
clogged.
Bad fuel; engine stored
without treating or
draining gasoline, or
refueled with bad
gasoline.
Fuel filter clogged,
carburetor malfunction,
ignition malfunction,
valves stuck, etc.
Correction
Recharge battery:
Replace fuse (p. 47).
Move lever to ON.
Move lever to CLOSED
unless engine is warm.
Turn engine switch to
ON.
Refuel (p. 24).
Drain fuel tank and
carburetor (p. 42).
Refuel with fresh
gasoline (p. 24).
Gap, or replace
spark plug (p. 37).
Dry and reinstall spark
plug. Start engine with
throttle lever in FAST
position.
Replace or repair faulty
components as
necessary.
Correction
Clean or replace filter
element(s) (p. 32 35).
Drain fuel tank and
carburetor (p. 42).
Refuel with fresh
gasoline (p. 24).
Replace or repair faulty
components as
necessary.
