10 Client Agents Guide
When the client agents are installed and configured, you can use BrightStor
ARCserve Backup to receive data from each workstation in your data network.
The client agent browses its targeted directories, prepares the data, and
transmits the data across the packet network. The backup server then
prepares the data for storage on the designated backup devices. These
simultaneous processes between the client workstation and the backup server
create an efficient, automated backup environment.
If your hardware includes alert support (hardware drivers post alert messages
in the operating system when a drive status is degraded or is predicted to be
degraded), you can configure ProActive backup from the Backup Agent Admin
so that network clients submit volume level backups to the BrightStor
ARCserve Backup server during critical hardware situations. Using ProActive
backup, you can also initiate node- or volume-level remote backup jobs from a
selected BrightStor ARCserve Backup server to the host agent. The BrightStor
ARCserve Backup server you select must have a device group configured to
accept ProActive jobs, and you should dedicate this device group for ProActive
jobs only. To configure a device group to accept ProActive jobs, click
Properties during device group configuration and enable the ProActive
Backup Allowed option. For more information on device group configuration,
see the online help.
Note: ProActive backup supports only the default job configuration.
Computer name resolution allows the local Windows computer to automatically
detect the remote Windows machine's IP address when connecting for backup
and restore operations.
Both the backup server and the network clients can use this feature. A local
BrightStor ARCserve Backup server can use computer name resolution to
connect to and back up data on remote machines. Similarly, remote client
computers can use the feature for ProActive backup connections.
The client agents for BrightStor ARCserve Backup offer several security
features, including client agent password security, system logon security,
intelligent client-to-server data encryption, and integrated virus scanning with
repair of infected files. The following sections offer more information about the
BrightStor ARCserve Backup data encryption and virus scanning features.
