If installation in suchareasisyouronlyoption,then the installa-
tion must be accomplished in a way that the pilot flame and
mainburnerflameare elevated fromthe floor at least18inche_
While thismay reduce the changes of flammablevapors from a
floorspillbeingignited, g asoline a nd other flammable substances
shouldnever be stored or usedin the sameroom or areacon-
taininga gaswaterbeater or otheropenflameor sparkproduc-
ingappliance.
NOTE: Flammablevaporsmay be drawnby air currentsfrom
otherareasof the structure to the appliance.

and the latest editionof ANSI Z21.22 and the coderequire-
mentsof ASME.If replaced, the valvemustmeet the require-
meritsof localcodes, b ut not lessthan a combination tempera-
tore and pressure reliefvalvecertifiedas meetingthe require-
mentsfor ReliefValvesand AutomaticGas ShutoffDevices fur
Hot Water Supply Systems, A NSI Z21.22 bya nationally recog-
nized testinglaboratorythat maintains periodicinspection of
production oflistedequipmentor materials.
The valvemustbe markedwith a maximumset pressure not
to exceedthe marked hydrostaticworking pressureof the
water heater (150 IbsJsq.in.) and a discharge capaclt); n ot less
thanthe water heaterinput rate asshownon the model rating
plate. (Electric heaters- watts dividedby 1000 x 3415 equal
BTU/Hr.rate.)
Yourlocaljurisdictional authority, w hilemandating the useof a
temperature-pressure relief valvecomplying with ANSI Z21.22
and ASME, may requirea valvemodeldifferentfrom the one
furnished with thewater heater.
Compliance with suchlocalrequirements mustbe satisfied by
the installeror end userof the water heaterwith a locally pre-
scribed temperature-pressure relief valveinstalled in the desig-
nated openingin the water heater in placeof the factoryfur-
nisbedvalve.
Forsafeoperationofthe water heater,the relief valve "inust n ot

The Discharge Pipe:
Must not be smallerin sizethan the outlet pipesize of the
valve,or haveanyreducingcouplings o r other restrictions.
Mustnot be plugged or blocked.
Mustbe ofmateriallistedfor hotwater distribution.
Must be installedso as to allow complete drainageof both
the temperatore-pressure relief valve, and the discharge
pipe.
Mustterminateat anadequatedrain.
Mustnot haveanyvalvebetween the relief valveand tank.
