Relief Valve
_WARNING
At the time of manufacturethis water heater was provided
with a combination temperature-pressuresreliefvalvecertified
by a nationallyrecbgnized testing laboratory that maintains
periodicinspection of production of listedequipmentor mate-
rials, as meeting the requirements
for Relief Valves and
AutomaticGasShutoffDevices for Hot Water Supply Systems,
and the latest edition of ANSI Z21.22 and the code require-
mentsof ASME.If replaced, the valvemustmeet the require-
ments of localcodes, but not less than a combination tempera-
turn and pressure relief valvecertifiedas meetingthe require-
mentsfor ReliefValvesand Automatic GasShutoffDevices for
Hot Water SupplySystems, ANSI Z2h22 by a nationally recog-
nized testinglaboratorythat maintainsperiodicinspection of
production oflistedequipmentor material_
The valvemust be marked with a maximum set pressure not
to exceed the marked hydrostaticworking pressureof the
water heater (150 IbsJsq. i n.) and a discharge capacitynot less
than the water heater inputrate as shownon the modelrating
plate. (Electric heaters - watts dividedby 1000 x 3415 equal
BTU/Hr.rate.)
Yourlocaljurisdictional authority,whilemandating the useof a
temperature-pressure r elief valvecomplying with ANSI Z21.22
and ASME, may require a valvemodeldifferentfrom the one
furnished with the water heater.
Compliance with suchlocalrequirements mustbe satisfied by
the installeror end userof the water heaterwith a locally pre-
scribed temperature-pressure reliefvalveinstalled in the desig-
nated openingin the water heater in placeof the factory fur-
nishedvalve.
Forsafeoperation of the water heater, the relief valvemustnot
be removed from it'sdesignat_cl opening or plugged.
The temperature-pressure relief valvemustbe installed directly
intothe fittingofthe water heaterdesignated f or the relief valve.
Positionthe valvedownward andprovidetubingsothat any dis-
chargewill exit onlywithin 6 inchesabove, or at anydistance
belowthe structuralfloor.Re certainthat no contact is made
with anylive electrical p art. The discharge o pening mustnot be
blockedor reduced in size under any circumstances. Excessive
length, over30 feet, or useof more than four elbows cancause
restriction and reducethe discharge c apacity ofthe valve.
No valveor other obstruction isto be placedbetweenthe relief
valveand the tank, Do not connecttubingdirectlyto discharge
drainunless a 6" air gapisprovided. To preventbodilyinjury, h az-
ard to life,or propertydamage, the reliefvalvemust be allowed
to discharge w ater in quantities should circumstances demand. I f
the discharge pipeis not connected to a drainor other suitable
means, t he water flowmaycause propertydamage.
The Discharge Pipe:
• Must not be smallerin sizethan the outlet pipe sizeof the
valve,or haveanyreducing couplings o r other restrictions.
• Mustnot be plugged or blocked.
• Mustbeof materiallistedfor hot water distribution.
• Must be installedso as to allow completedrainageof both
the temperature-pressure relief valve, and the discharge
pipe.
• Mustterminate at an adequatedraln.
• Mustnot haveanyvalvebetweenthe relief valveandtank.
AWARNING
The temperature-pressure relief valve-must be manually
operated at least once a year. Caution shouldbe taken to
ensurethat (I) no one is in front of or aroundthe outlet of
the temperature-pressure relief valvedischarge line, and (2)
the water manually discharged will not cause any bodily
injury or property damage because the water may be
extremely hot.
If after manually operating the valve, it fails to completely
reset and continuesto releasewater, immediatelyclosethe
cold water inlet to the water heater, follow the draining
instructions, and replace the temperature-pressure relief
valvewith a new one.
