  • Page 4 Keep the printer dry. If water is accidentally spilled on the printer, turn the power OFF immediately and wipe it dry. Do not turn the power on until the printer is completely dry. Do not lean or stack objects on or against the printer. If an object is accidentally dropped into the printer, turn OFF power and carefully remove the object.

    Operator's Guide PAPER INSTALLATION DBØ-BA The printer accepts paper stock from 15-lb (56 g/m ) bond (18- to 20-lb or 86- to 75- g/m bond is recommended) to six part forms or card stock having 0.02” (approx. 0.5 mm) maximum thickness. Paper width can range from 3”...

    Operator's Guide POWER ON Press the | side of the power ON/OFF switch located at the left rear side of the printer. DAØ-S1 The following cycle occurs during normal power on. It takes approximately 10 seconds. When complete, On Line is displayed, followed by the firmware version, and the printer is ready to accept data.

    Startup PLATEN ADJUSTMENTS The platen adjustment lever sets the distance between the platen and printheads. The platen is the solid surface bracing the back of the paper as it is struck by the printheads. When you change the paper thickness, adjust the platen to the marked setting relating to the paper being used.

    Operator's Guide Fine Adjustment Complete travel of the platen adjustment lever gives 30 notched positions for fine adjustments. Typically fine adjsutments are performed in conjunction with printing a task. As you begin printing, open the operator access cover to check the print and make any desired fine adjustments. When you open the cover, the printing stops.

    Operator's Guide ON LINE PRINT ADJUSTMENTS You can adjust top of form and horizontal position while the printer is on line. Note: During this procedure, the printer automatically returns on line if no adjustment keys are pressed within 5 seconds. If the cover is opened during this process, Cover Open is displayed.

    Startup Horizontal Positioning Adjustment 1/10” maximum horizontal positioning is allowed with this procedure. This positioning is temporary and will be lost when printer power is turned OFF. 1. Press FORM FEED twice (while remaining On Line on line). On Line is displayed. The printer delays ¼ second between print passes.

    Help Menu HELP From the help menu you can print assigned setups and options. A setup is a printer configuration selected by pressing one of the SETUP keys. An option is a print quality or print characteristic. For information about how these and how the menu flows, turn to the Menu Map, page 27.

    Keypad DBØ--AV DISPLAY WINDOW The display window is a two line LCD (liquid crystal display). It displays printer status, menu items, and detected errors.

    Operator's Guide KEYBOARD KEYS FORM FEED. Advances paper to the top of the next page. LINE FEED. Advances paper a single line. Hold the kye down for continuous line feed. ON LINE Toggles printer between on line and off line. On Line or Off Line is displayed.

    Keypad INDICATORS POWER Glows green when printer power is on. Glows yellow when Near Letter Quality print is selected (from the menu or from the host). If not lit, the print quality setting is either correspondence or draft. PAPER Glows yellow when paper needs to be replaced or other fault condition is detected.

    Operator's Guide ACTIVE KEYS ON/OFF LINE Keyboard functions are performed either on line or off line. (ON LINE toggles the status between on line and off line.) On Line Functions On line means that the printer is set to receive and print data. While on line, LINE FEED and TOP OF FORM keys can be made active to adjust top of form and horizontal positioning while printing.

    Menu EMULATION/SETUPS WHAT IS EMULATION? Emulation is when one printer is set up to act like another. For example, if the printer is set up for Epson emulation, it reacts to the host commands as if it was an Epson printer. Emulations are necessary for printers because of the wide range of computer setups, computer programs, and printers currently available.

    Menu EMULATIONS/SETUPS ASSIGNED When you turn the printer on, it sets iteslf up according to a pre-assigned setup. This setup (called the default setup) can be either SETUP #1, #2, #3, or #4. It is normally SETUP #1. CHANGING SETUPS When the printer is turned on, the default setup becomes the active setup.

    Operator's Guide Permanent Changes Permanent memory is technically called “non-volatile” memory, or NVRAM. This type of memory retains information even when printer power is OFF. Setup 1-4 changes are reflected every time you press a SETUP key. If the printer is turned OFF/ON the changes still exist. Temporary Changes Active setup changes are active only until you press a SETUP key or until changed by the host computer.

    Menu Print Quality Draft (factory default) Correspondence Near Letter Quality DBØ-AR Draft print is a lower quality print, but prints faster than Near Letter Quality which is a very high quality print. Characters Per Inch (cpi) Cpi, or pitch, is the number of letters printed in a one-inch line measurement.

    Maintenance REPLACING THE RIBBON Caution: Genuine factory ribbon cartridges contain special lubricants to extend the life of the printheads. Using inferior ribbons may damage the printheads. 1. Position the head cartridge at the center of the mechanism. 2. Remove installed ribbon cartridge (see illustration below): Loosen/lift each ribbon guide by grasping the tab on the top of each guide.

If not, follow the remaining steps. 4. Tilt and place the ribbon cartridge so the V-shaped notches fit against posts near the front of the printer.

As it begins to engage the spindle (ribbon drive motor shaft), slowly turn the ribbon spool knob to align the cartridge and spindle. Caution: Forcing the ribbon cartridge on a misaligned spindle may cause the ribbon cartridge to fail.

    Operator's Guide Reset Ribbon Count The printer has a selectable replace ribbon option that notifies you when it is time to change the ribbon. If the option is: selected The message Replace Ribbon/Press On Line is displayed after a set number of lines have been printed. When ON LINE is pressed, the ribbon count is automatically reset and the cycle begins over.
  • Page 52 Maintenance Locate cable connection and note the latches on both sides. DBØ-AC Flip latches out and way from connector. DBØ-AO Evenly remove cable from connector. Caution: Ensure that the ribbon cable is disconnected evenly. Failure to do so could bend pins or damage the connector.

REPLACING THE FORMS COMPRESSOR Forms compressor replacement is required only if it is broken, bent, or worn. DBØ-BD 1. Open operator access cover and remove the ribbon (see Replacing the Ribbon, Page 40.) 2.

Remove and discard the old forms compresor. 10. Replace the ribbon and paper. Flip back the paper load lever and reset the platen adjustment lever.

    Operator's Guide CLEANING AND LUBRICATION CLEANING Do not use petroleum-based or other harsh chemical cleaners. Clean external surfaces including the windows using non-abrasive cleaners, such as Fantastik® or 409, or a glass cleaner. Isopropyl alcohol may be used to remove ink. Apply either with a soft, lint-free cloth or paper towels.

    Problems Test Print It is recommended to set the print width to 13.2” for a print test to achieve a test print area for each printhead. To change print width, refer to Forms Menu, Page 37. To perform a test print, follow the menu structure illustrated on Pages 54. The following illustration shows a sample of the test print pattern.

    Operator's Guide DBØAJAU1 Hex Dump Hex dump passes all communication data straight from the connected cable to the printed page without converting it to readable text. Hex dumps are used to isolate programming and communication errors. When you enable hex dump and return on line, hexadecimal codes and their corresponding ASCII characters print until you disable the hex dump mode.

    Operator's Guide PROBLEMS If your printer failed with an obvious problem, proceed to that specific area listed on the following page. If your printer malfunctioned and you don’t know why, repeat the process that failed. If it fails again, turn the printer OFF/ON and try again. If the printer operates it was possibly an electronics lock-up or similar fault.

    Problems 3. Replace any defective fuse. 110V or 120V uses a 6.00-a. slow-blow (1 ¼” x ¼”) 220V or 240V uses a 3.15-a. time delay (5mm x 20mm) 4. Reinstall fuses and snap cover closed. 5. Connect power cord and check printer operations. If the problem remains, call customer service ( Page 58).

    Operator's Guide LCD ERROR MESSAGES The printer mechanism is constantly monitored by the software. If a problem is encountered, a message is displayed. The first line of the message gives the fault, the second line gives an operator action. For example: Ribbon Motor Err Call Service When any error message occurs, check the printer for an obvious cause.

    Problems PAPER JAM OR SKEW Paper skew means that the paper is slanted (not evenly positioned) between paperfeed tractors. To clear a paper jam or straighten paper skew: 1. Open the operator access cover and flip forward the blue paper load lever on the left.

    Operator's Guide RIBBON TEARS If the ribbon is torn or damaged, it must be replaced. To do this, refer to Replacing the Ribbon, Page 40. PRINT QUALITY PROBLEMS Different types of poor print quality are listed below, along with possible causes.

    Problems TO CANCEL PRINT 1. Set printer off line. 2. Cancel the print job from the computer so no more data will be sent to the printer. The following illustration shows Steps 3-5. For a pictorial representation of the complete user menu structure, turn to Menu Map, Page 27.
