Getting Connected
6. Close all open dialog boxes and return to the desktop. Then, reboot the PC to save the PC
configuration changes to the operating system.
When the boot-up is complete and the desktop is open, verify the new IP addresses are correct as
described in these steps. You should record all the IP addresses in the WebLinx Configuration Log
to prepare for setting up the system links in the WebLinx Configuration program.
Set the AXB-NET device's Local IP, Subnet Mask, and Gateway addresses with the NET CONFIG
AxcessX program command. The AxcessX or NetLinx Studio program must be in Terminal
Emulator mode to use this command. The first AXB-NET IP address you use should be the non-
resolvable IP address assigned to the WebLinx Server plus one. For example, if the non-resolvable
IP address assigned to the WebLinx Server (NIC #2) was 192.168.100.200, then the first AXB-NET
device assignment should be 192.168.100.201. As you add AXB-NET devices to the system,
simply increment the IP address by one (.202, .203, etc.).
Program the AXB-NET device's Subnet Mask address using the same address assigned to the
WebLinx Server's Subnet Mask (like 255.255.255.0). Then, program the Gateway address using the
IP address assigned to the WebLinx Server (like 192.168.100.200).
When the addressing for the PC, NIC, and AXB-NET is complete, you can use the Ping command
in MS-DOS to ensure each is set and communicating correctly. At the MS-DOS prompt, enter
PING <IP address>. After a brief moment, you should see a reply (sometimes called pong) listing
the IP address and reply time. The IP address is probably invalid if you don't get a reply message.
You should check all the addresses you used for the Local IP, Private IP, AXB-NET, and Gateway
using the Ping command. Also, check Internet Explorer for connectivity capabilities.

Windows NT (Server/Workstation) and single NIC configuration

If using the Windows NT (Server/Workstation) OS, purchase and install one NIC configured for
TCP/IP communication into the target PC. Then, follow these instructions to assign a static IP
address (supplied by the ISP) and a non-resolvable IP address (sometimes called a Private IP
address) to the NIC to create the network for the WebLinx system. The second (non-resolvable) IP
address must comply with RFC-1918 specifications as described earlier in this manual to create a
secure network. FIG. 3 shows a sample Windows NT (Server/Workstation) and single NIC
configuration.
1. Locate and single click the Network Neighborhood icon on your desktop. Then, click the right
mouse button and choose Properties to open the Network dialog box.
2. Click the Protocols tab to open the list of network protocols. Then, click TCP/IP Protocol and
the Properties button to open the Microsoft TCP/IP Properties dialog box.
3. Click the Specify an IP address option and enter the static IP address, Subnet Mask address,
and Default Gateway address supplied by your ISP.
4. Click the Advanced button to open the Advanced IP Addressing dialog box. The IP and
gateway addresses you entered should appear in the dialog box.
