Changing The DeckEngagementBelt

Shutthe engine offand removeignitionkey beforeremovingthe cutting
blade(s)for sharpeningor replacement.Protectyour handsby using heavy
gloves when grasping bladesand pulleys.
TheV-beltsfound on yourmower arespecially designedto engageand
disengagesafely. Asubstitute(non-OEM) V -belt canbe dangerousby not
disengagingcompletely.Fora properworking machine,useidentical
replacement b elts aslisted in parts list of this operator'smanual.
All beltson yourmoweraresubjectto wearandshouldbereplaced if anysigns of
weararepresent.Tochange or replace the deckengagement belt onyourmower,
proceed asfollows:
I.
Remove t he cuttingdeckfrom the mowerasinstructed earlierinthis
section.

Avoid pinching injuries.Neverplaceyour fingers on the idler springor
between the belt and apulley while removing the belt.

Remove t he belt coverasinstructed earlierinthissection. R eferto Figure 25
on page 22.
3.
Remove t he belt keeper a sinstructed earlierin thissection. R eferto Figure
27on page 23.
4.
Loosen, but not remove, t he nut andboltwhichsecures e achdeckidler
pulley.SeeFigure 33.
5.
Remove t he belt fromaroundall pulleys.
6.
Route the newbeltasillustratedin Figure 33.
7.
Retighten the nutsandboltswhichsecure eachidlerpulley.
8.
Reattach the belt keeper a ndbeltcover.
ChangingThe DeckTiming Belt
Several components m ustbe removed andspecial toolsusedinorderto change the
mowerdeck'stimingbelt. See yourSears or otherqualifiedservice dealerto have
the decktimingbelt replaced.
Changingthe Transmission DriveBelt
Several components m ustbe removed andspecial toolsusedinorderto change the
mower'stransmission d rivebelt. See yourSears or otherqualifiedservice dealerto
havethe transmission d rivebelt replaced.
Beforeservicing,repairing, o r inspecting, alwaysdisengageblades,stop
engine andremovekeyto prevent unintendedstarting.
A20Ampfuseis installedinyourmower'swiring harness t o protectthe mower's
electrical s ystemfromdamage caused byexcessive a mperage.
Ifthe electrical s ystemdoesnot function,or yourmower'senginewill not crank,
first check to becertainthatthe fusehasnot blown.It islocatednearthe battery.
Alwaysusea replacement fuse with the sameamperagecapacityasthe
blown fuse.
