Starting
Engine

WARNING:Be sure no one otherthan the
operatoris standingnear the lawnmower
whilestartingengineor operatingmower.
Never runengineindoorsor in enclosed,poorly
ventilatedareas. Engineexhaustcontains carbon
monoxide, an odorlessand deadly gas. Keephands,
feet, hairand looseclothingawayfrom any moving
parts on engine and lawnmower.
1. Pushprimer(if equipped)threetimes.Wait about
two secondsbetweeneach push.See Figure4-2. In
temperaturearound55°For below,primefive times.
Donot primeto restarta warmengine.
2. Standingbehindthe mower,squeezethe bladecontrol
againstupper handle.See Figure4-2.
3. Recoil Start: Grasprecoilstarterhandleand pull
ropeout with a rapid,continuous,fullarm stroke.See
Figure4-2. Keepinga firm grip on the starterhandle,
let the rope rewindslowly.Repeatuntilenginecranks.
Letthe rope rewindeachtime slowly.
Electric Start (If Equipped}: Turnignitionkeyto the
rightto start theengine.See Figure4-2. Releasethe
key after the enginestarts.
Honda Engine
(if
Equipped):
1. Placethe fuel valveleverfoundon the left sideof the
engine intothe ON (OPEN)position.
2. Movethechoke lever(if equipped)all the way
backwardintothe choke position.See Figure4-2
inset.
3. Standingbehindthe mower,squeezethe bladecontrol
againstupper handleas shownin Figure4-2. The
chokewill nowbeginto slowlyreturnto the off choke
positionafter activatingthe blade control.Therefore,
quicklymoveonto stepfour below.
4. Holdingthesetwo handlestogetherfirmly,grasp recoil
starterhandleand pull ropeout with a rapid,continu-
ous, full arm stroke.Keepinga firm grip on the starter
handle letthe roperewindslowly.Repeatuntil engine
cranks. Letthe rope rewindeachtime slowly.

ARNING:Wait for the bladeto stop
completely before performingany work
on the mower or to remove the grass
catcher.
Stopping
Engine
1. Releasebladecontrol to stop theengineand blade.
2. Disconnectsparkplug wirefrom spark plug and
groundagainstthe engine.

Using Your Lawn Mower

without eitherthe rear door or the entire
grass catcher assembly firmly secured.
Be sure lawnis clearof stones,sticks,wire, or other
objectswhichcoulddamagelawnmoweror engine.
Suchobjectscouldbe accidentlythrownbythe mower
in any directionand causeseriouspersonalinjuryto the
operatorand others.

ARNING:If you strike a foreign object,
stop the engine. Removewire from the
spark plug,thoroughly inspectmower
for any damage, and repair damage before restart-
ingand operating. Extensive vibration of mower
during operation is an indicationof damage.The
unit should be promptlyinspectedand repaired.
Using as Mulcher
Formulchinggrass,removethe grasscatcherand side
dischargechutefrom the mower.Foreffectivemulching,
do notcut wet grass.If the grass hasbeen allowedto
growin excessof fourinches,mulchingisnot recom-
mended.Usethe grass catcherto bag clippingsinstead.
Using
Grass Catcher
Youcan usethe grass catcherto collectclippingswhile
youare operatingthe mower.Referto setup sectionfor
instructionson attachingthe grasscatcher.
