Blade Care
_
ARNING:When removingcuttingblade
for sharpeningor replacement, protect
your handswith a pairof heavygloves or
use a heavyrag to hold blade.
1. Disconnectsparkplug wirefrom spark plug.Turn
moweron itsside makingsurethat the air filter and
the carburetorare up.
2. Removebolt, blade bell support,blade,and adapter
from the enginecrankshaft.See Figure5-3.
NOTE:Whenremovingthe blade,adapter,etc., be care-
ful not to removeor misplaceparts aboveitassociated
with the engine pulley.
3. The bladecan be sharpenedwith a fileor on a grind-
ingwheel.Do notattemptto sharpenthe blade while
it isstill on the mower.Whensharpeningblade,follow
originalangle of grind.Grind cuttingedgesequallyto
keep bladebalanced.
4. Removebladefrom the adapterfor testingbalance.
Balancethe bladeon a roundshaftscrewdriver to
check. Removemetalfrom the heavysideuntil it
balancesevenly.

cause excessivevibration when rotating
at high speeds, it may cause damage to
mower,and could break causing personalinjury.
5. Lubricatetheenginecrankshaftand the innersurface
of the blade adapterwith lightoil. Slide the blade
adapteronto the enginecrankshaft.Placethe blade
on theadaptersuch that the sideof the blade marked
"Bottom"(or with part number)facesthe groundwhen
the mowerisin the operatingposition.Makesurethat
blade isalignedand seatedon bladeadapterflanges.
6. Placeblade bell supporton the blade.Align notches
on the bladebell supportwith smallholesin blade.
Replacehex boltand tightenhex boltto torque:450
in.Ibs.rain.,600 in.Ibs.max.
Toensuresafe operationof yourmower,periodically
checkthe blade boltfor correcttorque.
Belt Care
1. Disconnectthe sparkplug wireand ground itagainst
the engine.
2. Drainthe fuel tank or placea pieceof plasticbeneath
the cap to preventgasolineleakage.
3. Tip moweron itsside (air cleanersideof engineup).
4. Removeblade,adapter,and relatedhardwareas
instructed under"BladeCare"above.See Figure5-3.
5. a. Removethe self-tappingscrewsthat securesthe
engine baffleto the deck. See Figure5-4. Remove
engine baffle.
b. Loosenself-tappingscrewthat securesdeck baffle
to the deck. See Figure5-4.

6. a. Workingfrom the rear of the mower,carefully
removebeltfrom transmissionpulley.
b. Oncebelt is off transmissionpulley,pushdownon
deck baffleto access enginepulleyand slidebelt
off this pulleyand out from underthe deck. See
Figure5-5.
