Comparing NAS and Virtual Tape Library targets

The following table summarizes some of the differences between NAS targets and Virtual Tape
devices.
Table 1 Comparing NAS targets and Virtual Tape devices
Virtual tape devices
Acts as a staging post to tape because backups are in tape
format; GI products support direct tape offload
Requires a backup application that supports backup to
tape
Integrates into the current backup routine and requires no
special backup jobs
May require purchase of a 'tape backup' licence for the
backup application

Connecting to the HP StoreOnce Backup System

There are two ways of connecting to the HP StoreOnce Backup System:
The Web Management Interface (GUI) is the main tool for accessing and configuring the HP
StoreOnce Backup System and its devices and monitoring performance.
On HP B6000 Backup Systems enter: https://<IP_address>/storeonce
HP B6000 Series only: You can also connect a system console and keyboard directly to the
appliance and use Command Line Interface (CLI) commands to perform additional administrative
and support tasks, as well as many of the web functions. The CLI is accessed via SSH to the
<IP_address> of the B6000 Management Console.

Multi-node systems

Earlier Backup Systems, referred to as G1 and G2, were single-node systems, from G3 onwards
the HP StoreOnce Backup System will initially be available as a multi-node system. The single-node
StoreOnce Backup System is a rack-mounted system with a single server and associated storage
that is designed to meet the needs of Small and Medium Businesses. The multi-node StoreOnce
Backup System has a minimum configuration of two servers (or nodes) with associated storage
and a maximum configuration of eight servers (or nodes) in a cluster configuration that provides
resilience and failover and brings StoreOnce technology into the Enterprise environment.
