System Prerequisites

In order for toptools to monitor an NT system:
The system must be NT 4.0 SP4 or higher
The system must be in the same domain as the toptools server
The toptools user must have administrator rights on the system to be monitored
In order for toptools to monitor Windows 95 or Windows 98 systems:
The system must have a DMI agent installed
Toptools discovery must have identified it as having DMI
The system must be in the same domain as the toptools server
On non-HP systems you must install the HPResMon agent in addition to the system's DMI agent
The Toptools user must have administrator rights on the system to be monitored
Installing Performance Agents on Non-HP Windows 9X Systems
Non-HP Windows 9X systems require both the manufacturer's DMI agent and the HP Toptools HPResmon.exe
agent.
1. If the system manufacturer's DMI agent is not already installed on the system to be monitored, install it.
2. Insert the toptools CD in the PC running Windows 95 or Windows 98 that you want to monitor and copy
\TT4DAgents\9XPerfAgentsNonHP\HPResMon.exe to a directory on the system to be monitored.
3. Run HPResMon.exe. It will self-extract into the agent files.
4. Run the Setup.exe file that is extracted.
5. Access the toptools program on the toptools server using your browser. This can be done at the toptools
server or any PC on the network.
6. Run toptools discovery and make sure that toptools has discovered the system and has identified the system
as having DMI. (See the DMI column of the Device Type list.)
7. Make sure the new device has been added to a Custom Group being managed.
8. Select Performance, System Performance, and Settings.
9. Select the appropriate Custom Group and the new device(s).
10. Click on the Start Collection button.
Installing Performance Agents on HP Windows 9X Systems
HP Windows 9X systems require the HP Toptools agent. (You must select the optional Toptools Resource
Monitoring feature.)
1. Insert the toptools CD in the PC running Windows 95 or Windows 98 that you want to monitor and copy
\TT4DAgents\v5.0\<device type>\WinNT & Win9x Agent>\<agent.exe> to a directory on the system to be
monitored. (New the agent versions will be released over time.)
2. Run the agent. It will self-extract into the agent files.
3. Run the Setup.exe file that is extracted.
4. Install toptools selecting the optional "Toptools Resource Monitor" component.
5. Access the toptools program on the toptools server using your browser. This can be done at the toptools
server or any PC on the network.
6. Run toptools discovery and make sure that toptools has discovered the system and has identified the system
as having DMI. (See the DMI column of the Device Type list.)
7. Make sure the new device has been added to a Custom Group being managed.
8. Select Performance, System Performance, and Settings.
9. Select the appropriate Custom Group and the new device(s).
10. Click on the Start Collection button.
You can also access the agent files on the toptools server (\program files\hptt\data\packages) and copy them over
your network to the systems to be monitored.
