Using HP Toptools

This chapter describes how to navigate the toptools console and use its applications and components (Toptools for
Desktops, Toptools for Servers, and Toptools for Hubs & Switches). Specific information for configuring and using
individual applications and dialogs is also provided in the toptools online Help system. The following
documentation is included on the toptools CD and provides greater depth on each specific topic:

The toptools console provides access to the following core management services:
•
View managed network assets through browsing or reporting.
•
View device or application alerts received by toptools.
•
View and monitor status of your network resources.
•
Use tools that allow you to browse and change device configuration or troubleshoot problems.
•
Use tools that allow you to update device software such as BIOS and agents.
•
Use tools that allow you to monitor network and system utilization.
•
Control the configuration of the toptools server and its services.
To access this information through the toptools console, you must open a session by launching a browser and
entering a URL to the toptools application on the toptools server: http://your_toptools_server/hptt. For information
on supported web browsers and their configuration for use with toptools, refer to the Toptools Consoles section of
the Installation chapter.

Navigating the HP Toptools Console

Toptools is designed to help users quickly and easily start browsing and managing their network. The toptools
console consists of the following main controls or displays:

The Navigation Panel and main 'window'.
•
The Device Selector
•
The Alert Log
•
The online Help system
The Device Selector, Alert Log, and online Help system may be accessed through the Navigation Panel.
When the toptools console opens, it displays the toptools Home page.
