Chapter 6. Solving problems

This section provides basic troubleshooting information to help you solve some
common problems that might occur while setting up your blade server.
If you cannot locate and correct the problem using the information in this section,
see the blade server Hardware Maintenance Manual and Troubleshooting Guide on
the IBM BladeCenter Documentation CD or the IBM BladeCenter T Documentation
CD that comes with your blade server, and the "Server Support" flowchart in the
front of this book.

The following tools are available to help you diagnose and solve hardware-related
problems:

BladeCenter T unit.
The power-on self-test beep codes indicate the detection of a problem.
– One beep indicates successful completion of POST.
– More than one beep indicates that POST detected a problem. Error messages
also appear during startup if POST detects a hardware-configuration problem.

your BladeCenter unit for more information.
This table lists problem symptoms and steps to correct the problems. See the
"ServerGuide problems" on page 60 for more information.
These charts list problem symptoms and steps to correct the problems. See the
"Troubleshooting charts" on page 61 for more information.
Real Time Diagnostics tests the major components of your BladeCenter Unit,
including the management modules, switch modules, CD-ROM drive, diskette
drive, and your blade server, while the server operating system is running. Real
Time Diagnostics can either be plugged into an existing IBM Director
environment or installed without IBM Director present. For documentation and
download information for the Real Time Diagnostics, go to

Notes:
1. As of the date of this document, the IBM Director CD does not come with the
BladeCenter T unit. If you have the BladeCenter T unit, see "IBM Director" on
page 10 for more information.
